Hi,

I've had chronic insomnia for a little over two years now. Generally, I get about 5-6 hours of sleep. However I go some nights (about 2-3 times a week) where I get as little as 0-3 hours of sleep. Ive tried changing my sleeping habits and hygiene and nothing works:

I've tried the following but no luck:

Herbal Supplements: Melatonin, Valerian Root, Chamomile, Passionflower

Other medication: Ambien, OTC sleeping aids (e.g antihistamines)

No caffeine after 3pm

No lights before sleep (including phones and tablets)

Keeping the temperature cool

Reading (non e-books) until I get sleepy

Getting out of bed after 20 minutes if I cant sleep, doing something until I feel sleepy then getting back in

Daily exercise (before 6pm)

Mindfulness (concentrating on deep breathing), muscle relaxation techniques, and stretching

Getting daily sunlight

Some CBT for avoiding negative thoughts associated with sleeping

I've memorized all of the above and followed them like a ritual yet I still get an average of less than 5 hours of sleep. I've kept a sleeping diary to see what works and what doesn't yet that hasn't helped. I just always feel wide awake and alert, even during the day I can't manage to take a nap because I'm not sleepy. I don't know what to do at this point especially since sleeping pills won't even make me fall sleep.

There may simply be nothing wrong :o

Some people don't require a lot of sleep and if being up all night doesn't negatively impact your alertness throughout the day, you might just need a lot less sleep than everyone else.

Hey there!

You seem to have explored all angles there @amiableDog4947, I'm sorry to hear you are still experiencing insomnia, may I suggest, if this in interfering in your general every day life and causing you upset, are you a able to see further advice from a professional, a sleep therapist for example.

As the previous comment mentions, some people don't require a lot of sleep, I sleep for on average 5 hours per night, this is my normal sleep pattern, however everyone is different.

I wish you well

@professionalPerspective60

Hi, I did speak to my therapist and she said that some people don't require the average hours of sleep. I've also been thinking about seeing an actual therapist that focuses in insomnia to see how things go. Though it would be nice to get some more sleep.
