Revived 2 of my oldest laptops!

I never felt so accomplished being able to bring these laptops back to life again in some way (at least for another few years). I'm also hoping to seek more techy friends here who can understand me. I'm quite shy to reach out to forums outside of this platform, so I thought of sharing it here for now.

I have a big and small laptop. Big laptop (around 16 inches long) used to belong to my father before he quit Windows and moved to MacOS. It's going to turn 13 years old this year and has been pre-installed with Windows 7 and was left asleep since 2016 (few years before the operating system became officially obsolete). The small laptop was handed down to me during my college years (since I couldn't travel everyday between home and school with my bulky 17-inch laptop), and was originally pre-installed with Windows 8. I think I've had it upgraded to Windows 10 (when it was still free), but I left it sleeping for 2 years until now, therefore it missed out on major system updates. The small laptop is already over 10 years old.

They're both only good now for basic use, such as surfing the web or typing. The big laptop was more complicated since it's ancient now. I've found an idea to replace Windows with Linux instead. I was a bit sad though when I was able to explore around Windows 7 once again with all the clicking sounds and tunes that pop up when it starts up and shuts down. I've been able to back up all the wallpapers and sound files just for keeps. I forgot how many different themes and sounds it came with!

I guess that's all I want to share for now. I spent so much researching for fixes and answers so that I know that I'm doing it right, as well as learning new things. I'm glad I took the opportunity to clean them up.

@OakSerenity That's great! I have some old laptops well about 8 I think lol, but then I got my first one in 2000 with millenium os, when they were like a brick, but it still works although only offline now and when plugged in. It is amazing how well it is doing and it has been my fave of all time. Although my old desktops were what I thought was fast.

Now I am reliant on a laptop but the battery is dwindling and I have to recharge at least twice a day, any tips on that?

@MistyMagic

Sorry for butting in. You might can shut down some of the apps running on your computer that take up energy..

  1. Select Start and Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations.
    Open Energy recommendations

  2. Select Apply All or individually adjust settings that are likely to use more power than average, such as screen brightness, screen saver, and how long your device can be inactive before it goes to sleep or turns off. To learn about each setting, Also lower the display settings.And use Battery Saving setting😊

@MistyMagic That's really cool Misty :) Hopefully your battery adjustments of your laptop will improve. I had a personal HP Laptop that gave up on 2 different batteries lol, but that laptop, if I can recall, would already be over 10 years old now 😆. It was a Windows 7 laptop but I managed to get it upgraded to Windows 10 for free.

@OakSerenity

Hi, Oak. Love your post. I dabble a bit with computers to. People bring them to me or give them to me because they think they are broke. I have had a lot of success fixing some of them, but then I had some that were just dead or they became dead after I tried to revive them😂

@WorkingitThrough2 Hello and thank you 😄! I sometimes hate being the only techy person both within my family and my circle of friends, then I realized I could just use it to my own advantage and develop my knowledge further xD.

hi @WorkingitThrough2 , so far so good! Laptops are doing okay, but not using them as much since I already have a desktop PC for everyday use. I'm also currently reviewing my digital literacy skills and learning Python :)

@OakSerenity

That sounds great. Is that some form of coding?🤔

I am glad everything is going well with you.❤️

@WorkingitThrough2 Thank you! And yeah, I just stumbled upon Python while looking up how to learn coding a few months back, so I might as well stick with it before wanting to jump into other programming languages. 😅
