Welcome to the Hobby Zone “Make Time Challenge!”
Greetings fellow hobbyists! As it is “self-care week”, I thought we could talk about how our hobbies can be an important part of self-care!
Self-care is made up of everything it takes to stay healthy, this includes basic hygiene, nutrition, medical care, exercise, but also means taking care of our mental and emotional wellbeing.
Oftentimes when we think of self-care we can see it as a list of chores and tasks that aren’t always intrinsically motivating, and may even be unpleasant. But our hobbies can serve an important role in improving and maintaining various aspects of our health, and can be aspects of self-care that we enjoy and want to spend more time doing.

The ‘Make Time Challenge’:
The object of this challenge is to make a point to take the time to engage in your hobbies as part of your regular self-care routine! It can be easy to dismiss our hobbies as a selfish or a wasteful use of our time. Taking a few hours to sit and read a book, write a poem, listen to music, or maybe make art or other crafts, can often feel like we should really be doing something else. We may think there are ‘more important’ things that need to be done. So we relegate these activities to our “free time” of which there never seems to be enough and so our hobbies get neglected. But self-care IS important, and spending time with whatever hobby you choose while on the surface it may just look like fun, is also self-care!
So this week, and in the coming weeks, I challenge you to schedule a time to dedicate to engaging in whatever hobby you choose rather than saving it for when you have free time, make a point to make the time for it on a regular basis!
Dust off those knitting needles, break out those coloured pencils, spend time with your plants, make that new recipe you’ve been wanting to try, or read that book you’ve been meaning to for months now.
Practice your self-care, make the time for yourself, and not only as an afterthought!
