Empathy

I've noticed that most of the time, people don't really want to know the answer. They just want someone to get it. It's very powerful to be able to talk without being interrupted or given advice, just a quiet understanding. It doesn't fix everything, but it does make things a little better, like you can finally breathe again.
I used to think that empathy meant saying the right thing or trying to make someone feel better. Now I think it's just about being there for someone and not trying to fix their problems. It's hard, but that's what makes us who we are.
Discussion prompt: When was the last time you really listened to someone, to understand them, and not just to reply to them?

I agree, this is a valuable lesson to learn.

We tend to want to make someone feel better.

Or fix them.

But we only know what's best for us, might not be best for them, so listening is key, the power sometimes lies simply in being heard 💖💜

Empathy isn't about fixing things or saying the "right" thing; it's about being present and genuinely listening. It's amazing how often people just need someone to acknowledge their feelings and stay with them.

Your perspective on empathy is really insightful, and it's something we all can work on – being more present and less focused on "solving" others' problems. It's about creating a safe space for people to express themselves without fear of being judged or interrupted.

@Ilovewatermenlonsomuch The last time was yesterday when a family member was telling a story. I normally just act like I'm listening since I was doing work. Then, I realized that this could be the last time they tell me a story and that this story probably means the world to them. Some times, you just have to actively listen

@Ilovewatermenlonsomuch You brought up grounding strategies, and I wanted to add that I have also benefited from physical grounding, such as gripping onto the edge of a desk or feeling something cold. It breaks the mental spiral and returns my thoughts to my body. Are your grounding techniques mainly cerebral or emotional, or do you ever employ physical ones?

That's a great question and one that made me think for a good amount of time. I would say maybe a few days back when I was talking to my friend and really wanted to hear her opinion on a matter I asked about, not just to challenge her but from curiosity of what she thought
