Radical Appreciation: An IDG Essay
I chose appreciation for my topic essay. As described in the skill description on the IDG course, appreciation is defined as: "Relating to others and the world with a fundamental sense of gratitude, appreciation, and joy." Now, some people actually practice what is called "Radical Appreciation or Radical Gratitude." ✨
This is the concept that one is grateful or appreciative for all things, all life lessons, including what is considered unpleasant. Now, this isn't to say we should be happy or appreciate the actions of those who hurt us. Though, when radical appreciation is applied to our lives, we are able to find silver linings in most situations. We can also show appreciation for what most people overlook, such as a blooming flower thriving in the sunlight.
Regardless if you are practicing radical appreciation or just sitting in a state of appreciation, you are actively attracting more of what you are showing appreciation for. Some of things we can do to apply appreciation into our lives are the following:
- Practicing Gratitude Daily- We can apply this by taking a moment each day, could be anytime, as soon as you arise, or retire to sleep, or in the middle of the afternoon while enjoying a cup of warm tea. We can take this moment to reflect on what we are grateful for. No matter how big or how small. We can also start a gratitude journal, which you can write in daily to express your appreciations.
- Expressing our appreciation- We can let other people know when we appreciate what they do for us. If someone performs a kind act toward us, or even toward another person or animal, we can let them know we appreciate them. We can let our loved ones know that we truly appreciate their support or just their presence in our lives. We can always find something to show appreciation for.
- Mindful Observation- Another way we can show our appreciation is by noticing nature and its beauty, artwork, or even just simple moments such as eating dinner with family. We can savor these experiences by showing our appreciation for them.
Daily appreciation doesn't just affect our lives in a good way, it affects the lives of other people around us in a good way as well. Character traits such as appreciation, optimism, and love are very contagious and will inspire other people to do the same. You have the potential to change the lives of the people around with a simple act of gratitude. Be the example for others and be the motivation to make the world a happier, more peaceful place. 😊
Discussion Prompts:
1. Share three things that you are grateful for.
2. Share what you think you can show more appreciation for in your daily life. OR how do you plan to apply these teachings in your daily life?

@JudyListens Wow! This is the second post of yours I have read and you put a lot of thought into it! Thank you!
1. I am grateful for the health of my family, my health, and my access to nutritious food and books.
2. I try to practice gratitude daily be making a grateful list in my journal and also writing out one positive experience in-depth. Mindful observation fulfils me a lot in nature or when experiencing art- paintings, music, plays, or movies. I need to catch more sunsets.
Also, I love the book “Hardwiring Happiness” by Rick Hansen. It helped me to cultivate positivity, gratefulness, and mindfulness in my daily life.
I’m grateful for my family, kind people, and the little things that bring happiness. I want to show more appreciation daily and never take the small blessings in life for granted. 😊
