Tired of Group Projects Failing? Let's Talk About "Co-creation" vs. Just "Collaboration"

Hey everyone,

I’ve been in one too many "group projects" where it feels like we’re just dividing tasks, working in silos, and then stapling our separate pieces together at the last minute. It often leads to a disjointed final product and a lot of frustration. Sound familiar?

I was reading the IDG framework and the skill of Co-creation really stood out to me. The guide specifically differentiates it from collaboration, emphasizing "psychological safety and genuine co-creation

." This means moving beyond just working together to actually thinking and building something together from the ground up. It’s creating an environment where everyone feels safe to throw out half-formed ideas without fear of being shot down.

So, how do we do this? I’ve been trying to implement a few key things in my study groups and even at work:

1. Start with a "Yes, and..." Brainstorm: Instead of critiquing ideas immediately, we dedicate time purely to building on them. Someone suggests something, and the next person has to say "Yes, and..." to add to it. It feels silly at first, but it helps generates great, innovative ideas we’d never get to otherwise.

2. Define a collective purpose, not just a task list: Before we even talk about who does what, we make sure we all have the same vision for why we’re doing this and what we want the final outcome to feel and look like. This shared vision becomes our compass.

3. Foster Psychological Safety: I make a conscious effort to acknowledge every contribution, model vulnerability by sharing my own uncertainties, and we agree as a group that all ideas are welcome in the starting phases.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences. What’s one thing that makes you truly feel part of a co-creative process, rather than just another cog in a collaborative machine? What practices have you seen that build real psychological safety in a team?

@ingeniousEnergy223 Great post!! I would say that working in a group would be a slight weakness for me, but even then, when people sit together to brainstorm, it is a wonderful process how everyone's individual ideas can bring a project alive
