Course 2, Discussion 3: High Expectations and High Warmth

Congrats! You made it the second course in the LDP! In this course, we focus on the specific interpersonal skills needed to be a strong leader on 7 Cups, including mastery of communication skills, time management, conflict resolution, stress management and empowering new leaders.

I know if you are here, you have read our values and culture guide. I would like to start off by further emphasizing one value that's required for a leader to be successful here, and that is balancing High Expectations & High Warmth.

Work environments with high expectations and minimal warmth tend to result in companies that are very driven, rule-oriented and risk-averse. The people do not tend to grow as much personally or professionally. On the other hand, workplaces that are high in warmth, but have minimal expectations, tend to struggle. Everyone is happy and feels loved, but not a lot of effective or focused work gets done.

7 Cups is high expectations AND high warmth. We expect a lot from you. You might feel like we think you are more capable than other people have suggested or maybe even more capable than how you see yourself. That is okay. Every person on the team has outperformed and done better than they expected. This is largely because warmth, patience, and trust help people make much more progress than they have in other environments. We have high expectations, but we will provide plenty of encouragement and guidance to help you get there.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
An imbalance between expectations and warmth can lead to a lack of motivation and growth. High expectations with low warmth might create a stressful environment, while high warmth with low expectations could result in a lack of productivity and focus.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
1) Community Impact: Low expectations can lead to complacency and a lack of innovation, while too little warmth can create a toxic atmosphere and hinder collaboration.
2) Impact on Fellow Leaders: Having low expectations might result in underperformance and missed opportunities, whereas too little warmth can damage relationships and reduce team cohesion.

@FrenchToast ✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth? Having high expectations with having a high warmth helps a lot and encourages to achieve those expectations. When someone has low warmth but high expectations it may come as rude, cold, disincouraging and toxic criticism.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders? Having too low expectations does not encourage us to improve which leads to not have our best potential as leaders and to be left unsatisfied. Too little warmth makes a community an unsetting and toxic space.

@jaboo Wait my reading comprehension left me. I forgot to say about the relationship with other leaders 🥲

Having too little warmth makes a toxic environment between peers and leaders (which should be an encouraging and inspirational environment). Having too low expectations may lead to extreme comparison when seeing other leaders.

@jaboo I agree with you! It'll be discouraging and indeed toxic. There'll be less motivation to actually work and feel happy. The leadership side might start to divide and that's not good.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

I think it is very difficult to achieve the balance of both warmth and expectations. In my role as a 7Cups leader I want to bound these ideas together because if their is an imblanace it is very likely that the people I am leading will not accomplish what they want to. Encourgament is so crucial in helping others and leading them down a positive path.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

If I had too low of expecations it would impact my community because I will not be able to give my community the resources and tools that they could use to give back further. furthermore, if I have too little wamrth it could make people not want to help others anymore since I am not helping them in the community. For my leaders it would make it very difficult to work together and achieve the understanding needed to work well on this platform.

@globalWillow3000 I’m with you! Finding that balance isn’t easy but it’s so important for both growth and connection. Also, it’s all about creating an environment where everyone feels challenged and supported to do their best!

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth? I think an imbalance can really throw things off. If expectations are too high with little warmth, it can feel overwhelming and discouraging. But if there's too much warmth and not enough challenge, progress can stall.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

Community: If expectations are too low, the community might not evolve or improve. And without enough warmth, people might feel disconnected or discouraged to engage.

Fellow leaders: Without enough push from high expectations, we might not challenge each other enough. And if there's not enough warmth, it can make teamwork feel distant.

@FrenchToast

What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

Productivity decreases greatly. I would not be able to do much work as I might either feel like I need to do more without anyone supporting me or feel loved and not do much work as I'm supposed to. A balance of warmth and expectation is salient and crucial to be productive.

How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

1. Community: Members would not get enough quality care and attention as they deserve. Too little expectations would leave the general requests going to about 30 members or more waiting with listeners active. Members would feel even more worried.

2. Fellow leaders: Too low of any of those would lead to low motivation on the leadership side. Leaders might have conflicts or get lazy to work and be active.

✒️What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

As a 7 Cups leader, an imbalance between expectations and warmth creates an unbalanced environment within 7 Cups, reducing opportunities for growth. If there’s no balance, the community lacks a safe and supportive space for members, and they may struggle to feel better or grow effectively.

✒️How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact:

1. The community:

Low expectations or too little warmth in the community will result in a lack of motivation, making it less effective in helping people. It also creates an environment that isn’t safe for peers to open up or feel supported.

2. How you work with fellow leaders:

Having too little expectation or warmth between fellow leaders leads to a lack of trust and collaboration, making it harder to work together and support each other effectively.

What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

An imbalance of expectations and warmth can reduce the teams' productivity. It can make the leader seem unwelcoming and unapproachable as the limited warmth is overidden by a demand of what the leaders expects. Makes the task seem more like a chore.

How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

If you have too low of expectations, the team will have reduced motivation, reducing productivity and effectiveness. Too little warmth will make you unapproachable in the community and less easy to work with.

What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

If I was to have high warmth and low expectations as a leader it would be harder to set boundaries and my expectations of others would be low. That might lead to projects or quotas not being achieved.

If on the other hand I had high expectations and low warmth then I might be disappointed if things don't meet my expectations. The low warmth would make me less approachable and harder to get along with.

How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact

1.) the community.

Too low expectations would lead to me not pushing myself to achieve things and being there when needed. It also might be that I expect less of others as well as having poor boundaries. High expectations would put undue press on the community when people here need acceptance.

Too little warmth might mean that I'm unable to be empathetic and caring. This community needs warmth as much as it does expectations.

2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

Low expectations would mean that I might not expect others or myself to meet quotas.  Other leaders would think that I'm not reliable when it comes to completing work.

Too little warmth would impact my relationships with other leaders.  They might not feel comfortable talking with me and possibly would avoid me.

@FrenchToast

My efficiency as a 7 Cups leader and the community as a whole may suffer if I have an unbalanced expectation and warmth. I risk stagnating if my expectations are too low since I won't push myself or others to advance. I can come appear as distant if I'm cold, which would make it more difficult for others to relate to me. This could lead to a less encouraging atmosphere in the community where people don't feel appreciated or inspired. It can cause misunderstandings or a lack of confidence among leaders, which would make cooperation challenging. Fostering development and connection requires finding a balance between having high standards and demonstrating sensitivity.
