Course 2: Becoming a 7 Cups Leader - (Discussion #11) Avoiding Burnout
7 Cups is founded on a community of passionate volunteers who lovingly dedicate their time to providing support.
You may face what is called burnout during your journey. You may have already faced this in your real life. Burnout is very real and must be recognized. You can't help fuel someone else when your tank is empty, after all!
To address and learn about burnout, we have created a slidedeck on how to avoid burnout.
Activity: Please read it through and in the replies, tell us what you learned, and what you will do to stay healthy and avoid burnout!
Then, please reply to 3 of your peers in this thread with encouraging or supportive words!
After completing the course quiz, please proceed to this post!
This post is brought to you by the Leadership Development Program Team, find out more information about the program here.
I learnt that burnout can lead to physical and emotional exhaustion, cynicism and detachment, feelings of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment! We all experience burnout every now and then but we have to remind ourselves the why! Why do we volunteer here in 7cups? We also have to set boundaries and take self-care breaks! Sometimes we do need to log out for a couple of days and refocus on ourselves!
@ASilentBunny
nice!!
@ASilentBunny you're definitely right. most people don't realize just how many different ways burnout can affect you
@ASilentBunny
Not only in 7 cups, but in general, throughout our life. We need to know the 'why'
@ASilentBunny
boundaries are really important, agreed.
@ASilentBunny
Agreed Bunny, It's nice to know these things, I mean for me to find out and realize them, as well as all the people in the comments coming to the same realization (:
@ASilentBunny
Logging out to focus on ourselves is something that we don't do enough, you are absolutely right there Bunny! I'll try to remember it 💜
@Heather225
I have learned that my work does save lives, especially via working with purpose and stepping up to help others, and burnout can not only cause problems for me but the work that I do. Furthermore, if I don’t look for signs of burnout I might harm others. I should be vigilant and careful and take a break when needed.
Reading through made me better understand how important it is to attempt to associate burnout with certain tasks. Identifying those tasks will help you mitigate burnout, whether it be removing them, or maybe rearranging your day to make it less stressful. This is the best way to resolve the issue of burnout.
@Dan76
I like that you focus on preventing them and realizing what causes them here Dan.
Awesome*High-Five*
Associating burnout with certain tasks sound like a good idea!
@Heather225
I have learnt that burnout can lead to certain emotions that can be weary and draining on the individual, also burnout is also a result of trying to do a million things at the same time, this confuses the mind resulting in headaches. To alleviate this problem, one needs to take a break from the job (s). The best medicine is taking rest (sleep) because the body is under stress, nature walks to clear the mind and try not to overthink the amount of incomplete work.
@KBeauty12
Agreed Beauty! But also don't forget a healthy mind also consists of eating healthy and staying hydrated! (:
@Heather225
What I learned:
I learned what a good leader vs a bad leader is like.
What I will do to avoid burnout:
I will manage my screen time effectively and make sure I don't have too many responsibilities going on at the same time.

Some of the symptoms that are listed I wasn't aware of them being a direct result of being "burnt-out" So knowing that is a good way to self-diag myself when burnt.
Of course taking a break is a good way to un-burn yourself, but What I didn't ever think of is paying attention to the key factors involved in a burnout state. And focusing on preventing them if possible, or avoiding certain things to stay well balanced.
Self-care. As Jesus once said. You gotta take that log out of your own eye before you take the splinter out of someone else's. Meaning get yourself good and healthy, and make sure you're good before helping others.
Being okay before you can help others is definitely a huge factor, especially on 7Cups! Thank you for that wonderful post! 💙
I really liked what you said about figuring out why you became burnt out in the first place and trying to limit that.
Please tell us what you learned, and what you will do to stay healthy and avoid burnout!
I've never felt that way. I typically love just being productive and feeling useful and like I'm reaching my goals. I enjoy working. If I ever felt that changing, I'd have no problem saying so and taking a break.
@GoldenNest2727
glad u know that it’s ok to say you need break and doing it.
@Heather225
I have at times lost a bit of sleep, and I think it may have something to do with taking on too many commitments in 7 cups. Since then, I have decided to take it a bit easier. Even though I do feel good about helping people at times it can be overwhelming. I like the idea of setting boundaries and reflecting on the time that I have available for 7 cups. But for me it is more really to do with trying to complete many courses too quickly.
I have decided that I will just try to do a little bit of work on my courses LDP and QLP every day until I get them completed instead of setting aside one day a week where I do a lot of work.
@Train1
I agree on your point of taking too many roles indeed can be really exhausting, I have experienced that as well!
Thank you for sharing it with us, train ❤
@Train1
doing work in small pieces is always a good idea.
@Train1
It's so true that we should not expect ourselves to do things really quick. One small part a day is a much easier way of completing the task : )
@Heather225
Please read it through and in the replies, tell us what you learned
I have learned that in any kind of work not only volunteering, one can easily experience burnt out at some point, which is completely normal because as human beings we crucially need a break from our daily tasks to re-energize and fill our tank , so it's essential to take note that "An Empty Tank Will Take You Exactly Nowhere, Take Time To Refuel"
What you will do to stay healthy and avoid burnout!
Personally, whenever I feel that my work is starting to be more of a strenuous task than an enjoyable one , I immediately act upon it and understand the clear indication that my body and mind is giving - that its need some time off. So, I usually spend time on activities that makes me feel good like taking a nap, working out, indulging myself in a dessert that I love and going for a walk with my pet dog.
@Harsvin
Going for a nap is one of my top 3 things to do when I'm feeling a bit burnt out. It feels so luxurious to take that time out for myself.
@gentleFox20
Indeed it is , Fox ❤
1 The signs of burn out and when it goood idea to do self care or step back from cups,
2 If I feel any signs of burn out I would take a break. I also would time getting in to roles and do not do all at once,
@Goalsforlife
You've made a great point about not expecting to get things down all in once. It's really inspiring :)
