2023 Pride Wrap-Up: Carrying Pride Even After Pride Month!
As Pride month nears its end, and on this the 54th anniversary of the start of the Stonewall Riots (click here to learn more), it can be important to take a moment to remember that Pride is not all about the celebrations and fun, and needn’t be confined to one month a year. Pride is something you can carry with you every day of the year. Pride is more than the parties and events, Pride is also about the struggles past and present, faced by the LGBTQ+ community, and working together to speak up, speak out, and ultimately be proud of who we are, and who and how we love. So as we wrap up our celebrations for this Pride month I invite you to consider the following questions:

What is one piece of LGBTQ+ history you know about or would like to know more about?
Tchaikovsky was gay. This makes my childhood of listening to his Nutcracker suite even more meaningful to me.
What is one thing about being an LGBTQ+ person that you are thankful for, and one that you have or still struggle with?
I’m thankful that I’m more “in my element” now, so to speak. I’m being more true to myself, and I’m blessed with having an accepting support group…helps that the majority of them are also LGBTQ+. I still struggle with deciding on how out of the closet I’ll be publicly versus wanting to lay low to avoid transphobia.
How will you carry “Pride” with you through the rest of the year?
Just keep being myself, really. I’m slowly shifting towards a more androgynous style, and I might cut my hair short again.

Finding things we loved even as young children have a connection to the LGBTQ+ community can be oddly affirming in a way. I'm glad you've been able to find more meaning to one of your childhood delights.
It can be a delicate balance celebrating and accepting ourselves while remaining on guard against hatred from others, but I am thankful that you have been able to be more true to yourself regardless.

What is one piece of LGBTQ+ history you know about or would like to know more about?
I’m constantly learning about LGBTQ+ history as I enjoy reading up about it. More recently though I came across an article about a gay men, who a century ago lived not so far from where I do today. Meeting his partner in what started as a friendship blossomed into love. He spoke openly about topics that were controversial in his lifetime, despite the risks. Being in the 1840s it was a very brave thing to do. I’m now looking into reading more about their lives in more detail.

What is one thing about being an LGBTQ+ person/ally that you are thankful for, and one that you have or still struggle with?
I struggle with some people’s attitudes but am thankful for those who support the LGBTQ+.

What is one piece of LGBTQ+ history you know about or would like to know more about?
I learned recently about the history of the treatment of trans people, from Magnus Hirschfield, through Harry Benjamin and the WPATH standards of care through to gender affirming care from the 1960's to 1980's and how demand for medical treatment has always been limited and pathologised with fabricated hurdles for trans people to jump over, and the classification of being trans classed as a "paraphilia" by Blanchard, creating huge stigma for trans women needing to transition. https://psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/2023-64773-001.html

What is one thing about being an LGBTQ+ person/ally that you are thankful for, and one that you have or still struggle with?
I'm thankful for having jumped through all the hoops! But also I'm thankful that I'm not alone and that there are people like me. I'm struggling because in my country cisgender people keep changing how I should live as a transitioned woman, first I was told to integrate and assimilate among other women, and now I'm being told to socially detransition and live as a man (but with a female body). It's very scary.

I can only imagine how painful learning about that history could be, I think at times that may be why we don't look too long or hard at the history, because so much of it is weighed down by suffering and hatred or misunderstanding.
The ever moving goal post and expectations can indeed be a challenge, hopefully you are able to simply set your own guidelines and live by those even while society seems intent on making it more difficult to simply be who you are.
Living your life and being who you are, are great ways to carry pride with you always!

i would carry pride with me all year by enjoying what i'm and what i feel and that is being a natural Bisexual and as much as i could i won't lose hope to have a society where i could be freely whatever i want to be and accepted

I am bisexual but in monogamous marriage.im only out to about 5 people. I've always had same sex attraction. I find this year I'm making many more FB post about lgbtq+ history..read several books this month lgbtq theme.. the degenerate war was very good lots of history. Then High school sara and tegan Quinn brought up so many thoughts and feelings. I grew up in thr same Era.

What is one piece of LGBTQ+ history you know about or would like to know more about?
In here diary, Anne Frank talked about her crush and intimacy (she described a kiss) with a close girl friend. I often wonder about how that affected her.
What is one thing about being an LGBTQ+ person that you are thankful for, and one that you have or still struggle with?
I prefer to "blend in" and not stand out. I don't want to be defined as being LGBTQ+. I sometimes feel shame for that but I know there's nothing wrong with it.
How will you carry “Pride” with you through the rest of the year?
I can carry "Pride" by chosing love in all aspects of life.

Ah to be able to go and speak with so many historical figures who identified as, or are thought to have been LGBTQ+. To learn the ways their experiences may speak to our own, or the ways they may have been vastly different.
Shame can be difficult to fully cast off and leave behind ourselves, it also is understandable to not want your identity reduced to solely an LGBTQ+ label. Can you think of any ways you would like to stand out?
Carrying love sounds like a wonderful way to carry pride as well!

What is one piece of LGBTQ+ history you know about or would like to know more about?
I came across a couple of Walt Whitman books, Leaves of Grass and Live Oak With Moss. Walt never publicly admitted being gay but there are references in his work that suggest he may have been involved for decades with another man and chose to keep it private due to the time period they lived in.

What is one thing about being an LGBTQ+ person that you are thankful for, and one that you have or still struggle with?
As a transgender man, I am thankful to have resources available that allow me to live my life to the fullest. One thing that I still struggle with is standing up for myself. I am not always comfortable being open about my gender dysphoria. Most of the time I fear that someone will make a comment that I don't have a reply to on the spot.

It is interesting to think about those who are thought to have been LGBTQ+, I wonder how they would feel now knowing history has identified them as such? It also makes me wonder how I would feel if it were me.
I'm glad you have the resources to live your life to the fullest though as you say standing up for yourself can be difficult, especially feeling that constant need to defend yourself and your right to be who you are.
I love how you have included supporting the community in carrying pride year round, that is such an important piece as well, so thank you for highlighting it!
