LGBTQ+ Film (Day 27 of Living Beyond a Label!)
Today we are exploring LGBTQ+ Film! More and more films are helping to build a body of work that explore LGBTQ+ identity, history, and life. LGBTQ+ films run the gamut of genres from documentaries or romance, to comedy and horror.
Here is a quick sample of some additions to LGBTQ+ film in the last decade in no particular order.
“BPM (Beats Per Minute)” 2017 Drama - It’s 1990s Paris when Nathan joins an AIDS activist group. While attending weekly meetings, he discovers that some take a more radical approach to protests.
“A Secret Love” 2020 Documentary/Drama - Based on the life of former baseball player, Terry Donahue, and the seven decade secret she kept from her family.
“Moonlight” 2016 Drama - The journey of Chiron, a young black man through three defining chapters of his life and the community that helped to raise him.
“Joyland” 2023 Drama - The Ranas family longs for the birth of a baby boy to continue the family line. Meanwhile the youngest son joins an erotic dance theatre and falls for an ambitious starlet, who is trans.
“Call Me by Your Name” 2018 Romance - In 1983 Italy, 17-year-old Elio’s summer quickly changes when he meets his father’s intern Oliver. Surrounded by the beauty of Italy, Elio and Oliver discover another type of beauty through the awakening desire that will change their lives forever.
“Booksmart” 2019 Comedy - On the eve of graduation, after spending their highschool years focused on their studies, academic overachievers Amy and Molly find they may have missed out on being teenagers. In their effort to make up for lost time they seek to pack four years worth of fun into one chaotic night.
“Will and Harper” 2024 Documentary - Will Ferrell and Harper Steele take a road trip across America together to learn and grow as their friendship enters this new stage after Harper reveals she is trans. Pushing past comfort zones and re-examining the world in this new light it’s a journey filled with laughter and tears.
“Red, White and Royal Blue” 2023 Romantic Comedy - Based on Casey McQuiston's best selling book of the same name, this is the fictional story of Alex Claremont-Diaz, the son of the President of the United States, and Britain's Prince Henry. While the two have had a longstanding feud and disdain for one another, when things boil over and they have to do damage control, they move toward friendship and even discover an unlikely spark between them.
“All of Us Strangers” 2023 Romance/Fantasy - One night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, Adam has a chance encounter with a mysterious neighbor Harry, which punctures the rhythm of his everyday life. As a relationship develops between them, Adam is preoccupied with memories of the past and finds himself drawn back to the suburban town where he grew up, and the childhood home where his parents appear to be living, just as they were on the day they died, 30 years before.
“Disclosure” 2020 Documentary - A look at Hollywood's depiction of transgender people and its impact on American culture.
“Bros” 2022 Romantic Comedy - Bros is a heartfelt comedy about finding sex, love and romance amidst the madness that is life.
“Blue Jean” 2023 Drama - Set in England in 1988, when the Conservative government is about to pass a law stigmatizing gays and lesbians. Jean, a gym teacher, finds herself forced to live a double life. As pressure builds and a new girl arrives at her school, Jean will face her biggest challenge yet.
“Portrait of a Lady on Fire” 2019 Drama - Set in 1770, the story of a mutual attraction between the female artist commissioned to paint a wedding portrait and the subject of that portrait, the young daughter of a French countess.
“A Fantastic Woman” 2018 Drama - After the sudden death of her old boyfriend, a transgender singer finds herself facing scorn and discrimination as well.

"Pride" (2014), directed by Matthew Warchus, is a story set in the 80es about a group of queer people who decide to make a stand in solidarity with mine workers. It's a story that highlights the importance of intersectionality and solidarity among oppressed people.
