Pride Around the World! (Day 20 of Living Beyond a Label!)
In 2023, of the 195 countries around the world, 101 had at least one Pride or LGBTQ+ visibility event. Even while in some of those 101 countries same-sex intimacy is still criminalized and acceptance is not widespread, these events are still happening.
In some places with greater levels of societal acceptance, Pride has become more of a celebratory event with an almost party like mood and energy. However, in much of the world Pride remains a protest seeking to unite LGBTQ+ people, build public awareness and acceptance, and continue to advance the quality of life though things like demanding equal rights for LGBTQ+ people. Ultimately the reality is, for many Pride is both a celebration and a protest, affirming the progress made while acknowledging how far there is yet to go.
In some places there has even been greater push back against LGBTQ+ rights, and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation created in recent years which has seemingly brought the importance of Pride events as both protest and celebration into focus for many in the community.
Pride events can be a single day, a parade or march, or an entire month of festivals, performances, social events and more. The shape and energy of pride events can be as diverse as those attending the events.

There are pride parades in Italy, but as it happens a lot in Western countries, I'm finding them way too "depoliticized" and relying on sponsors lately. Proud is not for rainbow washing and for labels to advertise themselves. It's for queer people and their political demands
