So what is Spirit Day?

Oct 19th is #SpiritDay is one of the most visible anti-bullying movements in the world, aiming to encourage and inspire LGBTQ youth to live their lives in their truth and authenticity.

Each year GLAAD organizes large events with celebrities, influential voices, news and media, coming together and “going purple” to highlight their support for LGBTQ+ youth, and work to create pathways to thriving for all LGBTQ+ Youth!

As acceptance grows, and the voices of hate and discrimination grow louder pushing back against the ground gained for LGBTQ+ people. Online hate continues to stir up real-world harm. Anti-LGBTQ+ voices are seeking book bans and bans on drag, bans on LGBTQ history and bans on healthcare, and normalizing hurtful language and bullying directed at LGBTQ+ youth. Spirit Day serves as a counter to this large-scale bullying and brings together LGBTQ+ youth, their parents and allies to see what is possible when acceptance wins.
