Need help w/ situation !
Hey, my family and my best friends are gay and I’m super supportive and actually fight people who have opposing views (anti-gay, etc.). So the story is I’m actually straight and not religious but I’m with someone who is religious and thinks that gays are wrong and are sining according to “God’s” eyes. However, he won’t ever be disrespectful to anyone-gay or not. I’ve made it clear to him that I will NOT tolerate disrespect towards my family especially for being gay but I’ve also fought with him on this subject and was on the verge of breaking up with him because he didn’t agree with me. I think that it shouldn’t matter who loves who and everyone should just be supportive about it. However I do realize that this is an imperfect world and that’s unfortunately an unrealistic idea to have in this world when hate and judgment are so common. The reason why I’m writing and sharing this is because I’ve never been with anyone who had an opposing view with me on this and am just wondering if there are ways to accept his religious beliefs even when it feels so wrong. If anyone out there is dealing with a similar situation and wants to share that would be so great too! Literally anything will help and I feel like I just want to know this can workout even though this is a big and serious issue to me. Thanks
@friendlyskies2000 hi there! as it looks like both of you have different views towards the LGBTQ community, I believe talking about it calmly and agreeing with him that he shows neutral/leaves no comments towards the community to avoid conflicts would be a good idea, as well as understanding that since your partner is very religious, it will be hard to change his views on it. but make sure you both respect each other's views, nonetheless, will be important, to manage to avoid conflicts/arguments about it. what do you think?
