Gender and sex

For most people, "sex" has to do with chromosomes or the body parts a person is born with. These are where terms like "AFAB" (Assigned Female at Birth), "AMAB" (Assigned Male at Birth), and "Intersex" sometimes come from. "Sex" is more complex than male and female, though. There are a variety of intersex identities, and there are also a lot more chromosome combinations than "XX" and "XY." Some examples of sex would be "AFAB," "XXY," or "Male." Some people will also use the name of a gender to describe their sex.

"Gender" often has to do with a person's identity. For many cisgender (not trans) people, their gender and sex assigned at birth will match. (A cisgender person who is assigned female at birth and has XX chromosomes would identify as a girl/woman). For many transgender and gender non-conforming people, their gender and sex will not match. (A transgender person who was assigned male at birth with XY chromosomes might identify as a girl/woman). There are a multitude of different genders, gender identities, and gender presentations. A person's gender may change often, or it may stay the same. Some examples of a "gender identity" would be "trans man," "genderfluid," "agender," or "cis woman." Some people will also use the name of a sex to describe their gender.

"Sex" is most often used in a medical or document-based setting. "Gender" is more often used in social or general life settings. 

This is actually something one of my friends has said. Gender is more of a social thing, and sex is what you were born as. Too elaborate on that in my opinion, gender is more like what you feel you should be, or what you want to be. It’s the way people should refer to you. Sex is more on your birth certificate and such, but it’s not exactly what you are.
