Improving our memory through mindfulness
Daily check-in for October 17th to October 19th 2025
We live in a world full of distractions. Whether it's working on a project, managing the daily hustle of family life, attending college, or going through our everyday routines, it’s easy to forget important tasks. I usually try to make a list of things I need to remember for the day; however, I often find myself forgetting that list at home (lol).
Mindfulness is a state of being actively present and attentive, offering pathways to make our lives smoother. Memory is defined as the complex process of encoding, storing, and retrieving information that we remember. This can be affected by factors such as lack of sleep, poor diet, or mental and chronic illnesses. Encoding refers to how information is learned, stored in our minds, and maintained over time.
Mindfulness practices can lead to structural changes in our brains. Mindfulness techniques can be integrated into our daily lives. Here are some examples of how mindfulness can help improve our memory.
**Mindfulness and Breathing**: When we combine these two, we can calmly think through problems. Mindfulness and breathing help us relax and gain a calmer perspective.
One breathing technique that can help us calm down is the 4-7-8 method. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds, and then exhale for 8 seconds. This practice helps us relax and focus on our breathing while reducing stress and anxiety.
Another way to improve your memory is to write in a journal about the things that stress you out or when your anxiety feels overwhelming. Writing down our thoughts allows us to visualize what we need to work on.
