Negative Meditation Effects

I listened to an episode of the Big Story on meditation and how it can be harmful - although the harms aren't very well acknowledge.

I plant to come back to the article posted, the author was interviewed.

https://harpers.org/archive/2021/04/lost-in-thought-psychological-risks-of-meditation/

CW for the article, mentions of things related to severe mental illness symptoms, including suicide.

A big take away that relates well to 7 cups is those in mediation practice need to be more understanding that some people do experience negative effects - so if it's something really positive for you great! Don't be dismissive of how it can hurt some though and also a bit of awareness of that can potentially be really helpful in a group setting.

Have you experienced negative meditation//mindfulness effects?

If you were in a mediation setting with others and someone seemed to be having adverse effects how could you help?

@AffyAvo Hi. Thankyou for posting this. You're right it's not talked about often, but I think it's more common than people realize. I'm able to meditate sometimes and find it helpful, but other times if something really distressing is going on in my life, meditation can induce dissociation. Especially if the issue I'm struggling with is related somehow to past abuse. I'm not always sure what makes the difference.

@shellofashell I forgot to answer the bottom question. If I saw someone having adverse effects, I'd probably ask if they're ok, if I can help. I'd remind them that they're safe, help recognize where they are. Maybe then help distract them. I would make sure not to touch them.

@shellofashell I can totally see how during times of distress meditation could result in dissociation but be helpful at other times.

I like your tips on ways to help someone, just starting with asking if they are ok!

@AffyAvo Hey - how are you?

I have - de/p and de/r at times. Sometimes I'm the one who meditated but I'm not the one who's present afterwards. Sometimes a panic attack or flashbacks - meditation and me don't get along too well

Grounding can help alot - for yourself and other people. Reminding them that they're safe is good too

Awesome post Affy :) thank you

@mytwistedsoul Thanks for contributing! I'm not familiar with the abbreviations are those depersonalization and derealization? I can see where meditation is at best done with caution in your case, that sounds rather scary to me, to start in one place meditating and then to not be the one in control after!

Grounding sounds like a great tip!

@AffyAvo Yep :) that's what they stand for. It is scary sometimes - I lose enough time

Take care Affy :)
