Mindfulness Check-in March 09
Hello everyone!! How are you all doing today?
Do you use a phone, computer, television for long hours? Because using it for long hours can be bad for your health especially eyes and ears.
We are living in a modern era and electronic gadgets became a part of our life. We could not imagine our daily life without it because of a lot of our activities dependent on it. Like, using the phone to interact over voice or text or video. Or the use of a computer.
All in all, a good amount of time you spend on watching screen continuously. It causes strain to your eyes and affects your mind and body health.
So, it is suggested to be mindful of the screen time. Divide your screen time into blocks and take a short break now and then to minimize the adverse effects.
Also, take a day off from the screen and spend time with your family or nature. Practice mindfulness of your surroundings and you will find it has something to offer to you. Something worth notice and acknowledgment.
Speaking of which, are you mindful of screen time? How do you practice it? So share your thoughts on Screen time and let me know what are you grateful for in this moment!!
Good morning with Obs!!

@ASilentObserver I am terrible with screen time because I'm always on my phone. I do however take breaks if I'm on my laptop or a computer. When I'm working though I'll be a lot less on it because I won't be bored :)
@LilyBlossom21
Psychologically, boredom is very interesting. Sitting doing nothing is one of the three meditation practices taught by Trirema. Don't waste your boredom, watch it!
@LilyBlossom21
Oops, sorry, Triratna!
@ASilentObserver
Both my sons work with computers, and both of them have taken on board the idea of a "technology sabbath" where they use no phones or computers on one day a week.
For both of them, currently, it's Saturday, so I can't get hold of either of them then lol, but perhaps that's just one of the ways it's benefitting them.
They both say that by Sunday they are itching to go again.
I'm in the Lake District today, sitting in a bay window watching the river Greta flowing past - very fast, it's been raining. Very soothing from this side of the glass!
@ASilentObserver
Thank you for this awesome check-in. So much truth yet we are addicts to electronics-we call them screens in our house. I am ok now about not being on computer or phone long-as I work to much!! lol But when my client is sitting down in his recliner I can easily watch shows with him. We watch How Is It Made and documentary. I used to be bad and be on here like 6-8 a day but not no more. There is wonderful things to be mindful of instead of staring at a screen
Thanks for the good post and reminder to be mindful about how much screen time. I work at a computer all day for five days a week. So on the weekends I try not to spend any computer time. Probably spend my time working on art projects or visiting with friends.
@MissPen
Imho art project = mindfulness. Uses and integrates both sides of the brain, and the body as well.
My wife says it's an easy way to lose a couple of hours.
I just moved, so I'm far away from friends and family. I'm on my phone constantly to keep in touch. I'm also looking for work, so I have a lot of free time to spend on social media, or watching Youtube... I've noticed myself on my phone for several hours at a time. I think it's affecting my eyes. They get tired and I find myself blinking a lot to offset the exhaustion. I want to stay in touch, but I don't want to be MIA with my friends and family. I'm also worried about being alone... I prefer constant company. I need my eyes for my livelihood as an artist, though, so I don't want to damage them... I'm really torn about what would be the best solution.
@betterchoices
Some suggest that you should get some amber coloured glasses for use on the computer or indeed any screen.
Short term, when you can make your screen gray shades.
@DavidEss That's so helpful, thank you!
@betterchoices I hear you Better and can understand. Probably you can think about the suggestions made by David as well as probably take short breaks in between two screen times. Couple of minutes to 5 minutes could be helpful to give rest to your eyes rather than constant seeing the screen.
@ASilentObserver Even little intervals like that would help, do you think?
@betterchoices
Me again. Yes!
The problem is that the screens consist of pixels, and the brain uses energy knitting them together into words and letters.
That's what I was told, anyway.
E-ink screens like kindle paperwhite, work differently and are not backlit, mimicking a real book.
@DavidEss Thanks so much for your help! I'm low on funds right now, but I'll see what I can do about getting tinted specs!
@ASilentObserver
This is so useful! I often find that I am attracted to checking what is going on in the online world and to take time-out is so important for all of us. I do this by trying to set routines in my day... so a scheduled time to go to bed and all devices are on silent. That I find is really useful and not checking emails/messages late at night as it's so disruptive to our natural sleep rhythm. I find it useful to try to meditate before sleep (it doesn't always happen of course!) and to take breaks from the computer during the day with perhaps going for a walk and connecting with nature. It's something that has to be constantly reinforced :)
