Mindfulness Daily Check-In December 18, 2017

Hello my wonderful peeps out there
Today I'd like to chat a little on "being mindful when gift giving"
Its not how much we give but how much love we put into giving. — Mother Teresa
The holidays are a time for gratitude, celebrations, family, friends, and, of course, gifts. Bombarded with advertising trying to convince you that you need the latest and greatest, its easy to lose sight of what really matters and overlook the art of thoughtful gift giving. Thoughtful giving comes from a practice of mindfulness. Being mindful means paying attention to the present moment without judgement, bringing greater clarity to the mind and more insight and creativity into life.
What Makes a Mindful Gift?
Mindful giving involves paying attention to:
What is meaningful for the recipient
Exploring your whys behind giving the gift
Reconsidering your preconceived or habitual ways of giving
As you slow down and consider the process of gift giving, you can swap the stress and anxiety of purchasing the perfect present for the true pleasure of generosity.
1. Give to Yourself First- During the holiday season there are many demands on your energy and time. When you are giving to everyone except yourself, your gifts may spread care to others, but fail to nurture your needs. As you become depleted, you are less present and miss out on meaningful moments. You cannot mindfully give to others if you have not first taken care of yourself.
2. Plan Ahead- In order to slow down and practice mindful gift giving, you need to take time to think through your choices. You dont have to wait until the holiday frenzy begins. Start early! Planning well ahead of the holiday season allows you the time and energy to brainstorm ways to make your gifts meaningful. It also reduces the stress of last-minute shopping or reaching for a quick, but superficial choice.
3. Give Presents of Presence- We each have unique skills and talents. Offering someone your time and expertise can be a truly thoughtful gift and also deepen your connection. Material items often break or become outdated, but the memories of sharing an experience or learning something new can last a lifetime. Think about a skill you can share by providing lessons for a loved one. Its a heartfelt way to spend time with a special person and share your passions. Teach them how to:
4. Share from the Heart- A heartfelt note can be a gift in itself. Offer forgiveness, gratitude, or love to remind someone you care about them and that they are cherished. Letters that come from the heart show a mindful connection. Similarly, gratitude or memory jars can be thoughtful gifts. Heres how to put one together:

Love this, I always sort of dread the gifts that come with Christmas becuase there's so often just more "stuff" to find a place for until doing the next clear out - and then trying to figure out what other people might actually want/need certainly get's pretty stressful and confusing! One other nice idea could be a collection of "IOU" voucher type things which they could choose to use any time over the year (could be anything like a hug/movie night/babysitting/massage/coffee/cookies/trip somewhere etc...) Hope you're having a good day
@AMusicalSilence
HIya Silence good to see you
ha-ha I do understand the "more stuff" and then finding a use or a place for them. I too found this a very stressful thing. So I came up with "asking" what do they want/need. Or just really listening to their likes and dislikes. I also so love the IOU's. Those things are always free and can be used when ever
@AMusicalSilence
I love the voucher idea. I always feel bad when someone ends up giving me a gift I don't need/want. I know they probably thought they were getting me something nice and they spent money on it and everything but if I can't use it I can't use it but I always feel a bit guilty and ungrateful then.
Hope you have a Merry Christmas.

Hi :-) Great topic!
Today I was mindful regarding gifts in the way that I talked myself out of rushing after another gift. And reminded myself that my loved ones are happier with a calm and relaxed me + less presents than with exhausted, irritated me + more presents.
Mindful gift giving is, sorry for sounding conceted, but it's just something I'm really good at if I say so myself. I always plan my gifts maybe 5, 6 even 7 weeks in advance just because it takes me that much time to figure out what exactly the person wants (without letting them know that I'm questioning them) and actually getting that gift. I have my brother's birthday present already lying in my closet and his birthday is in April. I just found that gift. And I know he is going to love it. So he deserves it.
Mindful gifts to me are gifts that maybe not everyone understands why you took al the time and effort to get it, or why you are so sure the receiver is going to love it while it's hardly anything. It's something between you and the receiver.
Mindful gifts are gifts you hardly remember the price tag from. They are presents that you don't care when you bought them, because you can find the perfect gift months before you actually gotta give it.
And lastly, mindful gifts are gifts you don't have to give for a special occasion.
Everybody, have lots of fun enjoying Christmas with your loved ones and goodluck with the last minute shopping

@JayTheBird14
HIya Jay good to see you today
It is good that you do plan ahead-and no your not sounding conceted-honest. It is good to sometimes plan ahead for whatever reason. Also I think when you really be mindful in buying a gift for someone, as well as take that time to get to know what they like or dislike, makes the gift more meaningful. I do agree with you on the taking the time and effort to be mindful on buying/creating a gift for that persons likes. Shows you care and are really interrested in the person as well as the gift and how they will enjoy it. I really like what you shared here today. Thank you!
I am making a little "healthier" snack gift bag for a friend of mine who struggles with her diet. It will still have good stuff in it (like wine) but I am going t get some healthier crackers and these low fat spreadable cheese wedges to go with it.
I still have a few small items to purchase and haven't quite figured that out yet but I got a few days. I might be getting a bigger tv for the living room and telling my husband that's his present b/c he is having trouble seeing the picture on the one we have now and barely watches it anymore. IDK. We will see.
@orangeOwl1462
HI there Orange good to see you today
oh wow can I get one of those bags too-lol That is awesome that you are being mindful of a friends diet and making a gift that they will enjoy. Oh wow what a thoughtful gift for your husband. I do hope he likes it. You are being mindful in gift giving good job!
@RumpleSteeleSkin
Thanks!
Mindful giving is to me to share A special gift with anyone less fortunate than myself. People that I know who have no family to give them a gift or card. I make Fruit baskets and care baskets for people in the community and deliver them. I don't know most of them so I give stuff that is useful for anyone.
I kind of regret for not starting earlier, but I might make something that is from some creative course on some website. I am busy too, I quit smoking just yesterday, and my boyfriend (who lives in another place) will visit me the day after tomorrow, and will be here until after New Year's Eve. We celebrate Christmas after New Year, and we do gifts on the New Year's Eve, but I need to make something in these two days... At least I'll be mindful of my decision.
@PurpleNina
HIya Ninja glad you are here today
I think that many regret not starting sooner-lol as we all run around silly finding things for others. I believe this can be stressful for many as we run around frantic lol. But being creative like you are doing is even better. Oh wow quit smoking is a big step but a good one. I hope this week you can find something to be creative with. And that your visit with your bf goes really well over the holidays
@RumpleSteeleSkin
Yay, Awesome Check In Rumple. I can relate this to myself as during festivals and holidays, I need to do more stuffs and while doing them somehow I skip myself. But, still the giving has its own beauty. When I give sweets or chocolates or gifts to kids of orphanage or in my residential area, the smile they get. I think to see that specific smile and joy, I can skip myself anytime. It simply provides an awesome feeling.
But,
wait! Where is my Gift? Rumple?
Thank you for this post.
@ASilentObserver
HI Silent good to see you today
I know how easy it is to forget "self" when holidays come up. But don't feel bad
I also love giving more then recieving it makes me feel more then fuzzy in the inside.For example I been so inpatient for a gift to arrive to someone, once they got the box they didn't open it
Mind you the gifts are wrapped, I just thought they would open it and put gifts under tree. But nope-lol So I went to bed disappointed-oh well-lol haha makes me laugh now to think of it. I see you mindfully gift giving here and even share that it makes you feel an awesome feeling, and that is good. Just know to stop and maybe make something for you or buy a little special gift for self.
Oh I didn't forget you at all my friend
This gift can be anything you wish it to be!
