Image result for how do we be mindful caring for a sick loved one

No one can prepare us for the experience of providing care for a ill family member or yourself. When sickness strikes someone close to us and ourselves, there may be a sense of chaos, urgency, and confusion. Details must be agreed upon, phone calls made, and appointments kept. Youd like to sit and catch your breath, but chances are there is a list of tasks and youre already running behind.

Illness has a way of sweeping the rug right out from under us. Some illnesses are chronic, part of our loved ones day-to-day existence, or ourselves dealing with mental health. Sickness is sickness and sometimes we have no control over it. Yes we-have-no-controlsurprise That really disrupts everything about us. But hey, slow breath and let's all look at some easy things we can prepare ourselves with.......

Get centered – Stop, for just a moment, and look at your daily routine. Are you getting enough nutritious food? Enough sleep? Are you able to go for a walk, even if just right out your door. You cant drive a car on an empty gas tank. Take a minute to make sure you include some element of self-care. If this feels overwhelming, keep reading.heart

Get connected – Explore resources for support in your community or within your family. Share openly how things are, express that you need help. Taking care of a loved one- let alone yourself when sick does get overwhelming fast. Reach out get some support.

Get answers – Got a question about your loved ones illness or yourself? Noticing a new symptom or a side effect of medication? Tell someone. Clinicians are often bound by confidentiality, which may or may not apply depending on your circumstances. It doesnt hurt to ask or to speak up. Knowledge is power. Find out some things to expect, or some things to look for. You deserve to know many things concerning a loved one's illness as well as yours.

Get support – It can be easy to isolate and lose touch with your friends and family, however, having concerned others who can be there for you is vital. Allow others in. If you can, remain involved in school, work, and activities you enjoy. Some days you may need to share how you are feeling with a friend, someone to go to a movie with you. Friends and family can be a vital part of your wellness team.

Get control – Control?? Youve got to be kidding! It may feel right now like nothing is within your control. Serious illness or injury can sweep through your life like a force of nature. But hear me out. What can you control right now? Making decisions about mundane tasks like what to wear or what to have for dinner can add a tiny spot of normalcy. You can prioritize your day in any way available to you. Also control means knowing your limit when you too are sick.

Thanks for the advice, @RumpleSteeleSkin. Winters are reallly hard for me, and I often suffer from depression during the winter. I'm going to try these tips this winter.

@RumpleSteeleSkin Thanks for your reply. In the winter I just feel my overall mood and energy level go down, and it's harder to get motivated to do things. I come home from work and it's dark already, so I feel like it's time for sleep, but I still have school work to do. Then the school work that would normally take me 2 hours to do will take me 5 hours. That makes it harder to have balance, because all I do is work and school.

Hi Kitty-wow this all does sound a bit stressful. So you are like me except the school worksmiley So we can't really change when it changes to dark- right? But we can change whats around us to kinda boost our moods a bit. Seasonal mood changes are very commeon- so let's not be hard on ourselves but to come up with a few things we know we have some control overheart 1. I went and got a strand of Christmas lights (well 3) and I put them up around my house. This always makes me smile seeing the bright lights flicker. 2. I also invested in good smelling candles that I liked. Not expensive at all. I had them around and lit a few. 3. Music- music always helps the mood go in on direction or the other. Can you do homework and listen to music?

I hope 1 of these things you try and it helps that mood with the seasonal change. If not my pm are opensmiley
