Mindfulness and Music

Hey, everyone! It's Sunday, and it's time for some tunes. **busts out electric air guitar**

But first, lets talk about coping skills. **leans electric air guitar against wall**

Music As A Coping Skill

We all have them; they help us respond to stressful situations. We know that some coping skills are healthy while others are not. Listening to or creating music can be a healthy coping skill that allows us to respond to stress and overwhelming events in our lives. The best part is that we can mindfully listen to and create music.

Sometimes, when we think of mindfulness and meditation, we picture silence and stillness. While this can be the case for some, its perfectly okay and possible to utilize sounds, music, and movement while practicing mindfulness. So, today, I am inviting us all to be mindfully present to a piece of music or a sound of our choice (preferably one that we find relaxing or calming).

Mindful Music Exercise

When you select your sound, find a comfortable position to listen and observe. Try to focus only on the song or sound. If closing your eyes helps, you can do that, and if not, keep them open. If your mind wanders to past or future thoughts, acknowledge that it wandered and return to the song or sound.

Questions:

1.) What song or sound did you select? If the song contains lyrics, feel free to share some of the lyrics. **Please ensure that the lyrics are appropriate by selecting supportive, non-triggering, and non-graphic language.

2.) What did you notice about the song or sound as you mindfully observed?

@EmunahHere Thanks Emunah for this post, the way you wrote the intro really made me smile :D

1. I listened to Ahmad Jamal - Pastures. No lyrics.

2. I noticed that the piano moves in the stereo field. The basser the notes are the more it's to the left and the higher they are the more it's to the right. Also I enjoyed it way more than the last time I listened to it. I was very mindful of the position of the instruments in the stereo field and then focused on them one by one to see what they were doing specifically and I noticed funny details I wasn't aware of (like the drummer changing the time signature in the middle of the song). And ultimately I listened to the piece as a whole until it ended.

Good practice ! Will do it again.
Any insights regarding music creation ?

Take care <3

That is awesome that you noticed new things about the song while listening! We do typically have new experiences with familiar things when we are being mindful. I'm also glad to hear you say that you will practice this exercise again. smiley

I do not have any insights regarding music making, but if you or anyone else does, feel free to share!
