Mindfulness and Parents with ADHD Children

"Billy slow down-stop running!"
"Tiffany please focus on your homework."
"Sue lets get dressed instead of screaming."
We parents know we have said some of these and more, being a parent to a child with ADHD. Well parents let's sit down, get something to drink-and let's talk on mindfulness and ADHD
Life with a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD or ADD) can be frustrating and overwhelming, but as a parent there is a lot you can do to help control and reduce the symptoms. You can help your child overcome daily challenges, channel his or her energy into positive arenas, and bring greater calm to your family. The earlier and more consistently you address your childs problems, the greater chance they have for success in life.
Before you can successfully parent a child with ADHD, its essential to understand the impact of your childs symptoms on the family as a whole. Children with ADHD exhibit a slew of behaviors that can disrupt family life:
1.They often dont hear parental instructions, so they dont obey them.
2.Theyre disorganized and easily distracted, keeping other family members waiting. Or they start projects and forget to finish them—let alone clean up after them.
3.Children with impulsivity issues often interrupt conversations, demand attention at inappropriate times, and speak before they think, saying tactless or embarrassing things.
4.Its often difficult to get them to bed and to sleep.
5.Hyperactive children may tear around the house or even do things that put them in physical danger.
The impact of ADHD on sibling's
1.Their needs often get less attention than those of the child with ADHD.
2.They may be rebuked more sharply and their successes may be less celebrated or taken for granted.
3.They may be enlisted as assistant parents and blamed if the sibling with ADHD misbehaves under their supervision.
4.As a result, siblings may find their love for a brother or sister with ADHD mixed with jealousy and resentment.
I know this all may be you know and maybe you don't. But as a parent of a daughter who is 17 with ADHD it has been a challenge to say. But as I set out on my own mindfulness skills I also teach my daughter them on her level she understands. So let me share some of them with you all:
Moving What movement do they have that they do repeatedly. Bring mindfulness to it. Share with them on how do they feel doing that movement? Ask them to notice anything they are sitting on-what does that feel like? When they move ask them to pay attention on counting numbers slowly rather then rapidly.
Using colour If your child uses colour to express themselves or its their "tick" have them notice what colors they use most? What does the marker or crayon feel like in their hands? Ask them to notice when they draw heavy or light?
Working with weight and pressure and touch Sensing through the body using progressive muscle relaxation using objects like stones or crystals having them hold or use sandbags on the lap if seated or across the hips if laying down.
Using the breath Get them into their body to notice where the tension sits.Ask them to breathe fast a few times, then slow a few times. Check in with them which one makes them feel better.
Burrito rolls Basically swaddling them in blankets or yoga mats. Parents once you have them comfortably secured and swaddled, you gently touch their feet, touch their heads and foreheads and checks. Talk soothing words to them. Slow words calm words
Lets work with their energy… lets not try to crowbar them into how we want them to be. Lets teach them and guide them how they can be more balanced with the energy they have. Meditation isnt a cure, its a way of helping our kids navigate life with what they have. Of reaching their potential. Of helping them shine. We (and more importantly they) can do this. Parents you can do this too

@RumpleSteeleSkin - really good stuff, Rumple
I have been trying to make some connections between ADHD and Mindfulness for some time. I super appreciate this thread and find this encouraging as I continue to research this concept. <3
