Putting A leash On Our Emotions

Bah-ha-ha not this kind of leash
Good morning community-it is good to see each one of you today. So I will put my own struggles out there with making sure I am in touch with mindfulness daily. As the "doing" mindfulness sometimes is a bit of a bloop-bleep
Many of you may know I do have kiddos-teenagers get that
One struggles alot with mental health stuff, the other with the beginning of LGBTQ-finding herself. Society can be very accepting and loving at times-then it also can be very cruel and non-accepting to some. So my daughter has been struggling for a bit and not mentioning this. I guess one can only take so much before they "lose it"Well to make this real short, she was placed in a program to help her out some.
It took a lot for me to calm-really it did. As I had my own input that needed to be put out there. Well I felt it was important. Feelings/thoughts were all over and I was not focused nor mindful of supporting my kid. So I had to excuse myself and do some regulation skills mighty fast.
Many of you on here are parents as well. And you know when something happens to the kiddos you are in attack mood. Our own feelings and thoughts explode and we find that it is about US and not about our child's feelings and thoughts. So I thought for today we take a look at "Leashing Our Emotions"
But what do you mean Rumple??? Break it down- Mindfulness Emotion Regulation this skill helps us to lesson the intensity of any given emotion that comes up. Why is this skill important? If we didn't have some sort of "warning bobber" lol inside of we all be exploding all over the place with extreme intense emotions-all the way to very low dark emotions.

So, how can we use mindfulness/DBT Emotion Regulation to help us control/maintain our levels of emotions? Emotional regulation reduces vulnerability toward unwanted emotions and increases emotional resiliency when these feelings do come up. While DBT/Mindfulness has many skills to help you cope with difficult emotions in the moment, emotion regulation strategies are very effective when practiced on a regular routine.
Some Skills We can use:
1. Understand your emotions Practice taking a step back from your emotional experiences and giving yourself the time and space to notice and desribe what you are feeling. Choose not to immediately become swept away by your emotions, but rather mindfully take a pause and actually notice what you are experiencing. This might sound like a simple concept, but it is not easy. Reflect on the role that emotions have played in your life and make an honest self-appraisal of how well you have been able to truly understand your emotional experiences.
2. Mindful Grounding- Honestly this can be done right in front of people
Yes and they will never know! Pick a picture, look out a window, count the holes in a ceiling panel, tab your fingers or feet to a familiar beat. Focus on this for a few minutes. Then you come back to the situation you were in. I find I do this so many times a day and I don't even realise I'm doing this. For real. The Crisis worker was chatting with me and I focused on her glittery bracelet. Noticing the rainbow colors it was showing. Also I could hear her, but I noticed the intensity in me was lowering.
3. Excuse Yourself Yes please do kindly excuse yourself from whatever is "feeding" your emotion levels. You are being mindful of yourself and knowing your personal boundaries and when to go and cool off. If you do this skill in a respectful way people then understand more on "why" you had to excuse yourself. Also they appreciate when we do excuse ourselves, so we can continue to have a production chat or event.
So community do share if you are comfortable on a situation where your emotions were intense and you used mindfulness skills. Or even share on a situation, where we can suggest and support you with some ideas for some good skills

I can't find the right words for expressing how much I would like that things would be much easier for you. I believe fearing that anything happens to kids, that they are not well is the most difficult emotion to deal with a mother can have.
Back to your question - emotions on a leach
I usually do not react at all to the outside, whether someone becomes unfriendly towards me or whether I feel getting unsafe. I usually withdraw into my shell and do what I have to do (I might give a sarcastic comment though but never something more). I benefit from mindfulness by grounding, watching was is around me, like plants, and by trying to express my emotions, let them out instead of bottling them, it's a learning process for me.
@amiablePeace77 good to see ya
thanks Peace you are so kind. She is doing better and well being a parent we stress along with our kids not really that we can't regulate our feelings. More so the deep love and care we have for them.
Oh wow Peace you sound like you really are into alot of mindfulness to know to not react. I do attend to my jungle of plants alot when Im irritated. Thanks for sharing this
