You must stop the compulsions at any price, this is the first thing.

I have suffered with unwanted thoughts for most of my life. One thing that has helped me is realizing that it is just an illness and doesn’t mean I am bad or stupid. Also helpful is realizing that OCD is just thoughts and thoughts are simply mental habits that were originally intended to help me cope with uncertainty and anxiety, and are not real. Thus it is possible to replace my thoughts with more positive ones.

Lastly it helps me to ask myself what belief about myself led to my obtrusive thoughts in the first place. Do I believe that I am not competent or not safe? Then I can say affirmations like “I am competent enough. I am safe enough.”
