Struggling with OCD and perfectionism getting in the way of hobbies
I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but I am at a point where my OCD and perfectionist tendencies have gotten so bad I cannot enjoy things that I used to.
I used to really enjoy collecting music, including vinyl records as an example. But recently, due to a number of different things, my OCD gets in the way. I keep feeling like I cause issues if an album doesn't play right. I'm afraid I'm mishandling things. If I accidentally mess up the art on it, I feel like I devalued it and won't be able to resell it. This happened just recently where I was cleaning one that was part of a fancy box set and got the label on the record itself wet; now it's all discolored and I'm afraid I ruined my chances at reselling it if I ever want to, not to mention that it just looks wrong. I could buy an individual copy of the same album, but then that would also feel "wrong" to me as well because it's not necessarily the same edition because the other was made for a box set and has different identifiers (i.e. things like barcode or certain numbers). CDs are another example, as some of the booklets on my rarer ones got messed up and I felt like an idiot for not taking better precautions to prevent it.
Another thing is my dad has been giving me collectible coins, and a couple of them got tarnished because I didn't have a place to properly store them at the time, and then I feel guilty because I know they're worth a lot and he was excited about collecting coins with me.
I know these are all just material things and I know it's all silly to get so worked up over this stuff because it's very much the epitome of first-world problems, but I can't help it. I was wondering if anyone else had these kinds of feelings.
Thank you for sharing this with us today.
Thanks. I really would like it to be deleted though. I feel a bit embarrassed 😅
Okay so when I originally posted this, my point was to convey that my OCD is so bad now that I’m worked up over extremely minor details and things. I know in the real world these things are insignificant but yet I have anxiety anyway.
I realized after posting this that I come off as spoiled and whiny. I apologize for conveying my original message so poorly. I kind of want this deleted for that reason.
But if it never gets deleted, I hope someone would like to share any similar experiences. Like if anyone gets super attached to material things to the point that it’s really bad, please share. How do you deal with it?
