What Could Be the Issue?
Hello everyone! I'm writing this thread in hopes of getting an answer to a question I have regarding cognitive therapy.
For a while I've been suspecting I have OCD (my symptoms were a lot worse as a child, and now the only really concerning habit has to do with checking my pockets constantly). I also have reason to suspect that I have binge eating disorder. I've read that cognitive therapy can help with both illnesses. My question is, if it can help with OCD and BED, does that mean I naturally have an issue with my cognitive ability if I do have both?
@raccoonangel firs things first, Binge eating can be a symptom of OCD.. so you don't need to think of them as 2 separate issues. Secondly, I think its best to explain what cognitive behavioural therapy is, and maybe you'll understand a bit better.
"CBT is a short-term, goal-oriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving. Its goal is to change patterns of thinking or behaviour that are behind peoples difficulties, and so change the way they feel."
So you don't have a problem with the way you are thinking, this therapy is designed to help CHANGE the way you are thinking in order to help deal with the feelings you are facing which in turn can reduce the symptoms
@ErikB ah, alright, thank you for the definition. I've heard that cognitive therapy can help problems relating to a person's thinking, which is why I was wondering if I have a problem with my reward processing sector. How effective is it, do you know?
@raccoonangel it is highly effective but like any type of psychotherapy, you have to want it to work in order for it to work best. Do some research on finding a decent counsellor in your area and go from there.
