A Communication Space for Jaeteuk and bestVase7265 only. (Please do not reply or respond, thank you)
I hope this can be a start of support for the long-term for the both of us.
@bestVase7265
I had called my dentist last week, because I had felt something sharp on my inner, lower front teeth. Thought it was a cavity or chip. So, I had an appointment this morning to get it checked, luckily, she found that it was just calcification build-up, and she says with my grinding when I sleep, parts of my tooth were rougher. So, she just polished and smoothed it out until it doesn't bother me when I brush the tip of my tongue over it.
After my appointment, I called my mum to see where they were. As we planned to get a new phone for me, my brother had looked it up over the weekend to see which service has the best price, and has the phone I wanted. So, I waited for my parents at the mall (which is across from the dental clinic, walking distance). When I called, they were just getting changed. So, I got a new phone now, and a plan that is cheaper than what I had been paying. My mum also changed her phone plan to, as the one she's currently using, does not have enough data for her to use. The only thing is, her phone needs to be ordered, but the paperwork has been completed. The rep says the phone will take 2 days to arrive, and will call her upon arrival. So, when the phone is in, all she'll need to do is transfer/sync it. I had offered to pay a portion of her phone bill, at first, we were hoping there's like a family plan, that way, I could just pay for it that way. But, the rep said that this single plan is just as good. So now, I'll just need to give an extra $50 to my mum for my monthly contribution of expenses.
Now, I just need a phone case, as they only had the black phone, as I wanted the blue. So, going to get a blue case, and I also need to get the adapter so that I can keep using my wired earphones. As the new phone does not include that audio jack, as most people use bluetooth or those airpods. And where I'm still old-school and use a wired earphone. Might have to get my brother to order it on Amazon, as he's got Prime.
So sorry that I didn't see this message until now. I didn't realize there was a second page. It sounds like you have a nice new phone and a plan! @Jaeteuk
So, the past Thursday, my Supervisor had asked me and another staff help her with a project. Basically, counting inventory for some parts. She had made lists for us, everything is in order according to the racks and bins. She asked that each of us, spend 2 hours per shift (Saturday and Sunday) to do it. So, today, I spent my last 2 hours counting (5-7pm). The other staff works evening shift, so, he said he'll do it later than evening. Tomorrow, I'll have to figure out when I'll do the 2 hours.
Today's my dad's birthday. He had booked a table for dinner, with my Uncle and Aunt joining us. Since I get off at 7pm (and I brought clothes to change), I didn't leave until 7:20pm. I drove, and luckily there was no traffic. I didn't arrive until an hour later. Some food were saved for me, but there were still some dishes that had to be served, so I didn't miss too much of it.
My mum started off that my work schedule will change by the New Year, and she let me announce that I will be an Instructor by the New Year. I said all of the management had recommended me, and my brother and mum chimed in that management is very supportive, and that one of the supervisor is also Chinese, same age, and speak the same language. Otherwise, I said, amongst the staff, 95% of Filipinos. My mum says that ever since I changed hospitals, things have been falling into place, and my cousin was like, once opportunity comes, take it. They left a spot for me to sit with my cousin, my parents and brother sat across from me (at a round table), there were 11 of us. Luckily the restaurant is just down the hill from our house, but even so, we didn't get home until just past 10pm.
The past three nights, I haven't been sleeping well.. always waking around 2am, luckily, able to fall back asleep again.. but, I'd wake up around 4am and 6am again.. 3 days in a row already. My alarm usually goes off at 7:30am. On Thursday and Friday, during my bus rides, I've been closing my eyes, especially the ride afterwork, and I had been yawning throughout my shift. Today, I was yawning on my drive to dinner (which I had prepare a cold cup of coffee). I have bought little cups that have shots of espresso. So, I just brought a thermos cup, and added cold water. Every time I stopped at a red light, I'd take a sip. And continued to yawn in between.
It's 11pm now.. although I'm still a little full, I should go brush my teeth and get ready for bed. Luckily on Sundays, I work a 3:30pm shift.. so, I can somewhat sleep in until 8 or 9am.. but being used to waking up at 7:30am, it's difficult to sleep in too late into the morning. But now that I will be driving for my Sunday shift too, better to get enough sleep. With my driving speed even when I get off at 11:30pm, I still don't get home until 12:30am. More yawning.
Sorry about the not sleeping. That is never fun. I have had a rough night last night on that front as well. I am finding that a large body pillow midway through the night helps me get back to sleep when I wake up.
Your dad's birthday dinner sounds lovely and I am glad that you were able to share some good news about your recent successes. Your family is proud of you.
@Jaeteuk
You know, sometimes I feel that my Supervisors really see me as their own.. Like one of them came into the lunch room, where myself and 2 other staff were waiting to head into the department a couple minutes before our shift starts at 11am. When the other 2 left the room, and it was just the supervisor and myself, she told me, "just to let you know, I'll be leaving for appointments, and the other supervisor will be arriving earlier".. Like, she waited until it was just the 2 of us in the lunch room to tell me, rather than saying it while the other two staff were also there.
Other incidents include that the evening Supervisor, asked myself and the Senior Tech to help her count some inventory last weekend. Also, she would tell me things about the department or possible changes that are happening soon and saying to not tell anyone else about it.. some insiders' news.. Last week, she also came to me and we spoke out in the hallway, she said our Manager asked her to speak to me.. about whether or not I was interested in having a full-time line, as they are thinking of getting rid all part-time lines and make them into full-time. I said, of course, but I'm hoping the line includes weekends, that way, when I start teaching, I could take a partial leave of absence, and still work the weekends. Just so I can keep my benefits going, accumulate my vacation and sick days. She says, because I've ported my hours over from my previous hospital, by seniority amongst other part-timers, I'm at the top of the list, which means, I get to choose first.. So, my Manager was wondering what my thoughts were on it.. Of course, I don't know when this will be happening, as the Manager probably needs to get approval from the higher ups and see if there's enough budget to change all part-time lines into full-time.. Apparently there is one staff who is a 0.4, which means, only works for 2 days.. they want to get rid of that.. so, thought, might as well change all part-time lines to full-time. So, there are 2, 3, and 4 days for part-time, I'm a 0.8.
So, after checking the driving regulations for New Drivers.. I found out that there is no restrictions about driving past midnight..so, I now drive on my Sunday shift too.. But as a good driver, I keep to the speed limits, so, it still takes me an hour to get home. Where as when I used Uber, it'll be like 20 minutes faster, as they usually use the highway, where they drive up to 100km/hr.. where the highway I take, max is 80km/hr.. and it's a longer route, but much less cars = less stressful for me.
It sounds like things are going well. I am glad that people are more friendly and letting you know what is going on. It is also nice that you can drive yourself more now. Every day you grow and improve at your new job. Keep up the good work. @Jaeteuk
You know, although I am driving more every weekend, and taking the same route, using a lane that requires the least lane-cuttings or lane-mergings, I still get nervous when driving.. my leg still trembles in the first 20 minutes of driving.. Usually when I'm going up a hill
After yesterday's drive, there seems to be a lot more road construction ever since the school year started the past Tuesday. There's two additional sections of the route that is has like 3 lanes merged into one.
You know that nurse that invited to his friend's BBQ.. I feel ever since then, we've become distant.. Before, I used to go into his office and chat whenever I arrived at the hospital earlier (during my weekend shift, as he works the morning shifts).. then, after the BBQ, he told me to not do that anymore.. as he doesn't want the other staff to see me chatting during the time he's supposed to be working.. I understand that, and makes sense.. but, since then, I feel like there's something off about us.. Before, he said that I could talk to him anytime.. so, I'd send him messages during the week, usually later in the evenings.. but, I don't get a response quickly, sometimes, it might take a couple of days..
Yesterday, when I arrived earlier, I suddenly wanted to ask him a question, regarding my shift of Saturdays.. after asking him, I tried to say a bit more, and asked what he's doing.. but, I get a feeling that he doesn't want to tell me too much about his work.. maybe because it's not really my business, but I feel that he's holding back.. early in the week, I have asked him if he started his new job yet.. and I never got a reply.. so, I asked him about it after my lunch break.. and he said he starts next week.. but, that was it.. like, there was nothing else to talk about between us..
After the BBQ, we met up once after my shift on a Saturday, where we grabbed a bite.. I tried asking him for another time recently, but he rejected the invite and said he'll just stay home and watch movies.. And here, he once told me that we can hang out outside of work, telling me what days he's free in the evenings..
Makes me wonder, did I tell him too much about me.. that he's slowly backing away.. or he's just really too busy to spend time with me? Yesterday, at the beginning of my shift, a coworker came to me asking if I was trained in doing endoscopes, I said yes, but I have never done it on my own, and our Supervisor says that if anyone does it over the weekends, that I could shadow them.. She wasn't trained, then, she mentioned something about maybe waiting until the evening shift starts and getting someone to do it then.. I was thinking during my lunch break, when I went at 1pm, that those scopes shouldn't be left unattended for a few hours, worried, I messaged my Supervisor and she told me to talk to the nurse and ask him to get another staff clean it.. So, when I went to talk to him after my lunch, he was like, yea, he had asked the morning staff to ask me first, and that he has already assigned someone to take care of it.. then, he goes on telling me that it's not something I need to worry about, like it's not my responsibility to make sure it gets cleaned in time.. I was thinking, "I'm just worried that the scope has been left uncleaned for a few hours, that someone needs to do it before it gets dried up and difficult to clean.. not knowing the morning staff had reported it to him, because when I left for break, it was still sitting there".. I was a bit thrown off when he basically said it wasn't my business to make sure someone cleans it.. I mean, if I was confident enough to do it.. none of this would have happened.. Because supposedly, the line I'm working in, does require me to clean those endoscopes.. but, because after my orientation, and with no past experience, I'm not confident to do it myself or be assigned in that area on a scope day.. Honestly, I've forgotten the steps already.. I know how to clean another type of probe, and use the machine that cleans it.. but, only by following instructions from the binder..
Anyways, on a side note.. I recently paid, and registered for that CSA exam that I need to complete before working as an Instructor.. So, my test day will be Sept. 23rd at 9:30am. I'll get my parents to drive me, because the test centre doesn't allow us to bring any of our belongings.. just a Photo ID, so without a phone or wallet, I have asked my parents to drive me and I think it's only like an hour long, so I'll have to pick me up afterwards.. We'll need to make our way back home afterwards, because Tuesdays is usually the day my mum has lunch with her friends at noon every week. So, I have a couple more weeks the review the material.. better make use of my three days off.
I think that the best thing to do in the case of your coworker is to take his mini signals and back off just slightly for a little while. It could be that things are going on in other parts of his life and he is distracted. I wouldn't necessarily think it was you or that there was any real problems with the endoscope cleaning. Keep remembering that there are always tons of other issues that make up people's reactions that we don't know about.
That being said, what I am suggesting is maybe contacting about half of the amount of times that you used to. Keep the door partially open to the friendship. My guess is that he might come back to it in another few weeks after his own life feels more settled. Let him know that you remain there and that you value the friendship by keeping things light and open.
It is great that you will be able to take the test soon. I am sure that you will do well. @Jaeteuk
Yes, I will keep my distance from him then.. or wait until he remembers me and wants to talk.. I'm tired of being the initiator.. I've done that too many times in the past friendships, I get tired of it.. If that person is not worth it, I'm not going to be the one putting all the effort to keep a relationship/friendship alive.
The College emailed me today, the Program Coordinator says, she knows it's a bit last minute, but was wondering if I'd like to lend a helping hand to 4 theory classes. As they will be learning about instrument education and wrapping instruments. She says I won't be the one teaching, but acting more like an assistant for when the students get to learn about the wrapping hands-on.
So, I quickly emailed my Supervisors asking what my options are if I were to accept the opportunity. As the days that the PC is asking, is this weekend and next weekend. Since I work both Saturday/Sunday, one of my Supervisor suggests use my vacation (just have enough, 3 days worth), for 3 days, then, apply for a Leave of Absence for the 4th day. Once everything is approved, I'll let the PC know, and she'll expedite my hiring process and says I will be paid the regular instructor rate. I'm guessing that rate would be higher, once I've passed the exam and is a Certified Technician.
@bestVase7265
That all sounds like a great opportunity and a way to ease yourself into teaching. Congratulations. I hope that it works out well. @Jaeteuk
I received the hiring package this afternoon from the college. My printer at home ran out of ink, had one last page to print and sign. So, I'll have to print it out at work tomorrow instead. My mum just offered to give me ride to my first day of work this Saturday. It turns out to be at the same site as where I had taken the Theory classes back in 2018. The instructor has set up a meeting time by the coffee shop at the hospital for 8:40am. Classes to start at 9am and ending around 3:30pm.
It turns out that the instructor is the same Theory instructor that taught me back then too. But, she might not remember me. We'll see. The program coordinator will also be there, to meet me and the students.
@bestVase7265
Sorry for the last post, I was on the bus, and my finger slipped and it submitted my post.
I was going to say, so with my weekend Instructor classes, having to use my Vacation days.. I'm not going to give a heads up to the nurse.. if he's wondering or cares enough as to why I suddenly took the weekends off with the use of my vacation hours, then, he'll message me. Otherwise, I'm going to stay quiet.
Like you've mentioned though, he does start his new position this week, so, he might be busy and not notice or say anything about it.
I just hurt my elbow at work. It scraped the tape dispenser at where we rip it off. It bled instantly. Went to the nurse's office it get a band-aid. I might need to grab another one to change it out at home. I don't know if I have the "H" shaped one at home.
Tonight I am going to just say that I was able to read things.
We are making a decision about whether to put my dad on hospice care. @Jaeteuk
That's a big decision.
It has been a very tough week. I will try to be back in a few days again. @Jaeteuk
So, the past weekend had been fun. I think I'll really like it when I start teaching next year. There were 39 students in total. I met other Clinical Instructors that went to provide assistance to the Theory classes. I learned from the students, that they Zoom 2-hr classes Tues-Thurs, then, have in-class over the weekend. Where they get some hands-on technique practice. That's why the Theory Instructor requested more help from Clinical Instructors.. as it'll be difficult if she was the only person setting up stations for the students to practice. She's got a large cart of equipment.
The experience was fun, interacting with the students, answering their questions, teaching them the techniques. The past Sunday, the students had a group activity towards the end of the class, they were divided by the hospitals they will be doing their clinical at. So, there was supposed to be 5 groups, but one of the hospitals, there were 3 students absent, so they were combined with another hospital. During the time the students did the activity, the Theory Instructor showed me the Clinical Instructor package, that I will eventually receive from the College. She explained what each paperwork was, and showed me papers that she created herself to make her work easier.
This afternoon, I received an email from the College, giving me the Clinical dates for the Winter term. With 3 days that are Stat holidays = no class, of which I could end up working. So, when I hand in my Leave of Absence, I'll keep those days (as one of the days are part of my line of work).
I'm now excited for the teaching.
I am glad that you are excited and prepared. It sounds like it will be an awesome opportunity.
My father is more settled but the decline continues. We will see how the next week goes. @Jaeteuk
It sounds like you need to take a break from Cups. I know you are involved in a lot of chats with many members here, but I really think you can minimize it for the time being. Spend more time with your dad.
My heart feels heavy for you, with the continuous decline of your dad. I'm here if you need me.
Thanks, but it is actually helpful to keep up with normal activities and not feel like my life is falling apart at my feet. The grief comes in mini-waves but I am focusing on the day to day. When I need to step back I will. But my messages will be shorter for a while. @Jaeteuk
Did the exam this morning.. the questions are quite tricky, there were two questions with vocabulary words that I did not understand the meaning of, so, just kind guessed the answers.. got the results right after submitting it (online, 100 multiple choice). Results just said "Passed", with a breakdown of a bar chart, based on 10 topics. But when I made my own calculations, the average was 76%, and I thought I needed 80% to pass.. maybe they lowered the passing percentage to 75%. Anyways, now, just need to receive the Certificate either in the mailbox or through email, then I can add it to my profile on the College website. This exam is needed to be renewed every 5 years.. Next time, I'll know what I'll need to study more of. That reminds me, I might as well take a picture of those topics, as I will need to return the notes to my Supervisor. She says she'll also need to renew her certification.
Since I need to work this Thursday, I treated my parents for lunch today.. as it's their Anniversary on Thursday, with work, we won't be able to celebrate the day of.. For the longest time, I thought they were going to Alaska with my Aunt for the cruise, I learned last night, it was actually a 14-day cruise down south, down to San Diego and San Francisco.. My brother offered to drive them out to the port, but my dad says that they could follow me to work, as there is a Skytrain station that I'll pass by, as they need to meet up with my Aunt before boarding because she doesn't know how to get there and her English is limited. But I told him.. let's wait and see what my brother says.. Since he offered.. let him drive them.
I am so glad that you passed your exam and that you are headed in a good direction on that front.
It is also lovely that your parents are getting to celebrate their anniversary both with you and on a cruise. That should all be very nice.
Things are pretty much unchanged here. I will see my parents tomorrow. @Jaeteuk
How are things going with your father? Sorry I haven't been checking on you, had been busy and trouble sleeping. My days off were busy. My parents came home around 10pm from their cruise last night. My brother picked them up from the airport as they flew back from LA. I went to bed after they got home. The past days though, I've been waking up around 2 and 5am. Not quite sure why. But, I do get my 6 hours of sleep when added together, but because I'm not asleep for the 6 hours straight, waking up 1-2 times in between, it makes me feel sleepy in the day. On my days off, I ended up taking a nap late afternoon. And when I'm working, I'm yawning a lot.
So, the past Thursday, my bus didn't come, I ended up waiting nearly 40 mins and a bus came to the stop. While during that time, the bus that passed by across the road, drove by 3 times. So, during those 40 mins waiting time, 3 buses should've arrived. I had plan to drop by the supermarket before heading home from the park & ride, but the supermarket closes at 9:30pm. With Thursday's late bus, I got to the park & ride by 9:30pm. Oh, and I forgot about uploading a bus pass on my Transit card during my days off, so, when I did it online Thursday morning (I suddenly remembered just when I walked out the front door), my pass did not work all of Thursday or Friday. The credit card transaction was still pending. So, I ended up using Uber for both ways on Friday. I checked the status yesterday, and it finally was removed from the pending list, so it should work by Thursday when I use it again.
Friday, the daytime Supervisor spoke with me.. as I had previously emailed her asking some questions as to when she had taught students before.. and as she answered some of them, she went on saying that other staff have emailed her and talked about me.. she said, they didn't mention the name, but she knows that it was addressing to me. Every time we talk, she always lets me know that I need to be prepared for others' jealousy, once our Manager makes the announcement about how I'll be a Clinical Instructor and teaching. She tells me, that the things that are being said against me is all out of jealousy.. there was an incident she mentioned.. so, when I talked to the evening Supervisor on Friday, I explained to her what happened.. and she said she had clarified the situation with the RN and what happened was actually reasonable. She said she gave the full story to the Manager.. and like the morning Supervisor, she says, the way the Manager sees it is also out of jealousy.. So, she told me to just ignore it.. and expect more when it is announced..
Which reminds me, as I return the notes to that Supervisor later (she's going to drop by the parkade for me to hand it back to her).. I'm going to ask her what I should do or say when the time comes, and others come to me and question why I was chosen or decided to teach and be a Clinical Instructor.. I wonder if it's something that I need to say, or Management that deals with it.. I talked to my brother yesterday morning, told him about the meetings and the incident.. he says, that Management shouldn't even be telling me these things, because it doesn't affect my work, nor was it something that I did wrong.. He also says that if others are doing it out of jealousy, it's the Management team that deals with it.. not me. So, I'll see what my Supervisor thinks.
My dad is still about the same though he is weakening. My sister was able to get in a nice visit with her family. I will go again on Saturday, but I am thinking that he won't be communicating much by then.
Your brother is right. There is no need for you to really know about any jealous remarks done behind your back. Your supervisors trust you and that is what matters. You are doing a great job. I hope that you will be sleeping better soon. @Jaeteuk
Wow, I just realized it's been 20 days since I last posted. How are things with you, your dad..?
My Manager has sent the email out to the department about my new role as a Clinical Instructor a couple of weeks ago. The two staff that had once wanted to teach too, they have not spoken to me since.. One won't even have any eye contact with me, the other, finally spoke to me on Thursday, but only because my papers were flying off the printer and letting me know the order of the sheets might be messed up. (Every day, at 2pm, we get picklists printed off from our printer, lists to pick for the next day's surgery). For some reason, on Thursday, the pages were flying off from it, so there were like 15-20 pages on the floor. That day, it took me longer to staple everything, because I first had to place the loose pages back to where they belong first. And we usually get a really thick stack of picklists, nearly an inch thick. Luckily, I could find where it belonged based on a few things on the sheet. But, it still took me some time.
Otherwise, aside from those two staff, many others have congratulated me. Seeing how they are jealous and possibly holding grudges, those two definitely will not be good buddies to assign my students with.. as they may purposely make things harder for my students or say bad things about me to them.. you never know..
Actually, there is something I wanted to talk about specifically in this post. Remember that nurse I was talking about, the one that I said I thought we could become good friends.. Well, lately, we still haven't been talking much.. I don't know, I'm a bit confused.. Because I'm usually the serious type of person, so, I can't tell if he's being sarcastic or what. Last weekend, I sent him a message after he had finished his shift, but I talked about work. And he replied with telling me not talk about work-related things after he's off, then, had a funny face emoticon at the end. I didn't reply, because his message made me feel like I did something wrong, or something that he didn't like. I'm afraid to ask him what he meant.. You know, I feel that currently out relationship, our text messages, I'm usually the one who asks him things first.. like how he's doing, or I tried to invite him over to my place over a weekend, during the time my family goes on vacation.. but, he said he'd be on vacation too.. I'm thinking maybe he's either going on weekend getaways or it's just an excuse to not hang out with me.. Usually on Saturdays, he will come check on my work progress at the end of his shift (he finishes at 3:30pm). On Saturdays, my main duty is cleaning Incubators, so he comes to check how many I've done since I started at 11am. When he came by yesterday, he was like, "how are things going? Working hard, or hardly working?".. then, he goes on saying that it's such a caucasian type of saying, and he says it always throws the other person off when he says it.. as we're both Asians. I understand that the saying is more like a joke, as if, knowing that the other person is a hard-worker, but just using it as a tease.. but, for some reason, I felt a little offended.. because it's obvious that I'm the hard-worker type of person.. I've been doing 6 the past 2 Saturdays. Ever since the afternoon senior tech told me that 4 was too little, I've been trying to work faster. Anyways, I'm just confused with that nurse's figure of speech, I don't know when he's joking/teasing, or is being serious.. Which drains me a bit, because I'm more of the serious type.. unless, I'm the one that starts with a joke/tease.. otherwise, I don't quite understand him. Am I losing another possible friendship? Since previously, I already spoke to him and talked a lot about me and my past.. I feel that aside from work-related topics, there's nothing else to talk about.. and yet, he doesn't seem to like it when I talk about work, when he's not working.. as he mentioned that he's the type that leaves work at work.
My dad is still with us but I believe he is weakening. It has been an unbelievably hard few months. The stress and the uncertainty have caused all of my symptoms to reappear after a number of years of being stable. So it is all very depressing at this point.
I think it is okay if you aren't close to those two people who are more jealous. My guess is that their jealousy will fade with time though. It usually does when they realize it wasn't the perfect fit for them anyway. But that's something that they work out on their own.
With your other colleague, I think asking a question or two could be good. It could be something as simple as "I have trouble sometimes telling whether you are being literal or joking. Could you be a little more straightforward with me? I want to understand your signals better." Then see how he responds. My guess is that he has some communication issues of his own that have nothing to do with you. It is still a friendship that is worth having even if it is a bit of a distant one. Each friendship evolves differently. @Jaeteuk
