@bestVase7265
So, my parents left for vacation this Tuesday morning. They will be back in a month, in Japan now, met up with my brother, who left for his vacation Nov. 10th, with two other friends. My parents will be in Japan first, then, will be in Hong Kong for like 10 days, visiting my Uncle's grave, as it's his first anniversary. Probably will see my Grandma too, as it's also been a year. Then, they will be back in Japan. Brother is gone for 5 weeks, so I have 3 weeks of freedom. At first, I thought it was freedom, but during our dinner on Monday, my mum was like, "Since you work a late shift on Sundays, getting home past midnight. Send us a message upon arriving home, so we know you got home safely." So, it looks like, it's not entirely freedom, I still need to check myself in with them.
But it was nice, tried new recipes for my meals. Started last night and tonight's dinner. Tonight's was more successful than last night's. For the past couple of weeks, my Aunt has been trying to buy me a winter jacket, my parents meet up with her every other week for lunch. She has brought over 2 different ones, both were too small for me. So, the day before my parents left, my mum sent her a message that it's no rush, and that I don't have a good eye for fashion, so, she could just choose whatever, and make a purchase when there is discount. So, this morning, I got a message from my Aunt. She took a picture of the jacket, as she wore it on her, and asked if I liked it. So, I just copied what my mum said, saying I don't have a good eye for fashion, and that it's up to her. Then, she tried to ask me if I'm available next week to give it to me, asking me what days I worked. So, I told her the truth, that I worked Thursday to Sunday, but there's a possibility that I could pick up other shifts on days I'm off. So, I told her, it's not rush for me to have a winter jacket, that we could wait until my parents come back from vacation.
My mum also reminded me that I can't tell my Aunt I'm going on a Cruise with them in January 2026. Because the last time my parents when with my Aunt, my Aunt told them, that if ever we were going on cruises, to tell her. See if she wants to come along. Apparently, she specifically told my mum, she would like to go on a cruise with me along, that way, we could share a room together. But the thing is, she wants a suite that has two rooms connected with a door. I told my mum, bringing my Aunt along is not called vacation, because my Aunt knows little English, so we would have to be with her all the time. And because she doesn't understand English much, watching shows, won't be as fun, she also might want to sleep earlier. Bringing her along would not be a relaxing time, it'll be more like work. As we would need to care for her and be with her all the time. For me, now that I get paid vacation, going on vacation in between my work, it's a time to relax and have fun, not to "babysit" someone. But, my mum is right about one thing, my Aunt is getting old, in her 80s, she might not have many years left to travel. My cousin is not a respectful type of daughter either, and when she tags along (my Aunt has to pay for her own ticket, otherwise my cousin won't let her go), my Aunt is used like a slave for her grandkids. Which is very sad.
We're going to Mexico, a birthday trip, before I start teaching February 2nd. My first cohort of students as a Clinical Instructor. We'd leave on Jan. 17th, but the College suddenly said there was going to be a meeting on the 21st, and I couldn't take the day off on the 22nd. So, we'll be flying out on the 23rd. Otherwise, we could've stayed at my Aunt's place for a few days before we board the cruise in LA.
Well, I'd better start winding down for bed now. Hope you're doing okay lately~
Sorry that it has been a while since I have written. The last few months have definitely been a rough downwards spiral.
My father is still alive but isn't doing well. He stopped eating last week and we thought he would die soon. But then he started up eating again after a week. It is minimal amounts but it is something. But when I saw him yesterday I thought for sure he would die today (my birthday). He was very unresponsive and staring through me almost. But instead he rallied again today and we had an okay conversation.
The up and down has been really hard emotionally. I have had to go back on depression medication after 5 years and am now on partial mental health leave from work. I am just grading but not teaching. My dad, plus the extra course I am doing this semester, plus my eye surgery and upcoming gynecological surgery in January, plus a horrible situation at work that has resulted in a mediation session with Human Resources has me spinning. Hopefully I will eventually get some resolution on something so I can start to heal. @Jaeteuk
Oh my gosh, everything happening all at once.. The medication, it's that bad, eh.. I feel for you, breaks my heart.
I once had a colleague, back when I worked in Retail. Her mum had been living in those assisted care homes for decades, unable to walk and basically bedridden. She told me, there were many times when she thought it was time for her to go (as she'd get infections and can't eat at times), but something always happens and she fights back.. and her health improves. It wasn't until a couple of years ago, when she finally left in her sleep.
I hope things will get better in the new year.. I'll be thinking of you 💖
@bestVase7265
Thanks. Today I found out that I will probably need a second surgery in 2026 on my eye. Sigh. @Jaeteuk
Oh no, I hope you won't need to be in an upside down position again!
@bestVase7265
Probably not. But I am done with things going wrong at this point.@Jaeteuk
I hear you. I hope things will begin to be more settled soon, with lesser obstacles that come up.
@bestVase7265
Thanks. I hope that you had a good day. @Jaeteuk
I was given another additional responsibility with work. I'm really grateful that Management trusts me. Suggested to use me as a backup contact (along with the senior tech) when our computer system experiences downtime. A contact person for the tech fixing things for the computer system.
Work has been busy as usual, but you know, it is only when I'm on my way to work, and is physically working, will I feel the most energized and awake. But when I'm on my way home, whether I'm taking transit or driving on the weekends, that's when I'm feeling the tiredness and yawning. That's why with transit, if I get a seat on the bus, because the stop I get on, I change to skytrain at the terminal station. So, if I get a seat, I'll hold my bag tightly on my lap and close my eyes to rest. Whenever I drive to work on weekends, I'll always have a mug with coffee for the drive home. Sipping it at every red light.
Have I ever mentioned that my mum and I are considered as tofu? In Chinese, it's like a slang that means we're fragile or easily bruise. Every Saturday, my entire shift is cleaning incubators for newborns. There are seven layers to take apart and wipe down, one of the layer is bulky, and I somehow banged my wrist on it, and it instantly bruised with a bump. Yesterday, while working again, that bump looked bruised again. As during the past week, the bruising had faded but there was still a small bump in its place. When I went for my first break, upon taking off my protective gear and gloves, I saw my left forearm suddenly had a red bruise mark that was like 2 inches long. That, I don't recall what happened. But honestly, my mum and I do bruise easily. I'm more of the medium tofu and mum's the soft tofu.. lolz.
I know this is off topic, but have you heard of Jackson Wang? He's like a global icon. He's finally touring North America next year. Here's to hoping I can get the tickets for April. I'll need to stay alert to see when pre-sale starts. It's going to be a steal. Luckily it's on Easter Sunday, that way, I don't need to worry about getting home late and needing to work the next day. With my teaching, there's no class Easter Monday. The venue is far from home, up to 2 hour drive if stuck in traffic. The concert starts at 8pm. So, would probably get home by midnight or so. Since it's so far, I'll probably try to Uber, driving would be too stressful for me. Then, when it ends, might need to taxi, as Uber drivers may not be willing to drive that far.
Anyways, this coming week, my days off. Monday, one of my mum's friends (a couple), we've planned a lunch together. I have a doctor's appointment in the morning, I wanted to get prescriptions, as my inhaler expired, I always want to have one at home as a backup in case I get sick. Because whenever I catch a cold, I cough so much, I'd start wheezing. Days are getting colder now, although I rarely get sick, it's still good to have it. I also wanted to share the good news with my GP about my current career and how I'll be teaching next year. She was very supportive during my grieving months last year, where I went to see her to chat, once a month. To keep me in check. My appointment is 10:20am and lunch is at 12:15pm, so in the middle, I'll shop around inside the mall, and also stop by my dental office to make an appointment for cleaning in January. Since with teaching, I might not be able to work at the hospital, which provides the medical insurance (I planned to request if I could keep my Saturday shift, but I'm not sure of our Health Authority will allow it). So, I thought I'd better get the cleaning done before my teaching term and ask about the progress of getting the x-rays and history from my periodontist in regards to my implant more than 10 years ago. As I wanted my current dentist to fix my implant (back then, because of a chip, the periodontist only sanded it down, making my tooth look shorter than the real teeth beside it). My mum had always wanted me to get it fixed. Now that our dentist is the daughter of a family friend, we want her to fix it for me. A few months ago, she clarified she was able to order the screw from the rep, but they needed my history from the clinic I got the implant from. A couple of months ago, the dental office told me that they weren't giving them the x-rays, that they had to try and ask again. But I never heard back from them, so, tomorrow, after my doctor's appointment, I'll check in with the dental clinic, it's on the way to the mall, walking distance.
Anyways, I have more to say, but I need to get ready for my drive to work. It's raining out, better give myself more time for the drive. I hope it stops raining by the time I leave tonight though. My eyes are so bad when driving in the rain, especially when there is this stretch of the road that does not have those reflective markings, I always felt like I'm blinding driving between the lanes, as I'm usually in the middle lane. I actually tried to file a report to the city and see if they could add those reflective things, but I got a response saying that they aren't the ones responsible for it.. I'll have to figure out who I can contact to get it added, I mean, it's for the safety of drivers on the road, not just me.
@bestVase7265
It sounds like you have bunches of good things going right now from the increased responsibility at work, to being more comfortable traveling, to the concert, to getting all the doctor stuff arranged. It is so nice when life is running fairly smoothly. You have worked hard to get things more stable and you should be proud of yourself.@Jaeteuk
For you, although you're experiencing rough patches at the moment, I'm sure things will cool off gradually. Just like how Glen has the River journey, you're having obstacles in your ride on the river, but these currents and rocks will not always be in your way.
Leaving my old hospital was the best decision I made in my life, by far. To see things slowly fall into place and getting my life back on track. The only thing missing is a life partner. Recently on my video feeds, I've been seeing a lot of horoscope/feng shui things. Saying things that my love life will not happen until I'm in my 40s, which is nearing, as I'll be 39 next month. So now, I'd like to think that maybe because I didn't really have a normal life until now, without that aspect, I wasn't attractive enough. But by the time I'm in my 40s, I would've worked more years at this hospital, and if the Clinical Instructor work goes well, I would've taught at least two cohorts by then. To be able to have a double career, of which I have passion for, I feel that would radiate off me; and help attract a life partner who is supportive of my careers. Nowadays, because I'm excited for my teaching in February 2026, I find myself thinking about things and smiling randomly, when I'm taking transit. And unlike 95% of passengers on the Skytrain or Bus, I'm not looking at my phone. I'm looking out the window, or thinking about my upcoming teaching experience and those are the things I feel good about. Especially when it's sunny out, I like looking at clouds.
@bestVase7265
That sounds excellent. I am so glad that you are happier and more confident.
I am still on a giant roller coaster myself but I keep trying to move forward. It has to get better eventually, right? @Jaeteuk
So, there is a concert I want to go to next year. Not sure if you've heard of Jackson Wang before. He's like a global icon, he's finally touring North America next year. I just saw a post this morning, the tickets go on sale this Thursday at 3pm PST. I'll need to take my coffee break minutes before 3pm, to fight for the tickets. It's going to be a steal for sure. I need to get the VIP 2 package. This will be a one-time thing for me, to spend however much it will cost to get that ticket. One of the most anticipated concerts I am wanting to attend.
I look forward to hearing whether you are able to get your tickets! @Jaeteuk
I got my ticket! At first, I thought I got the time wrong, like the time tickets starts selling. As I saw earlier that it started at 3pm.. I went for my break 5 minutes earlier and had my credit card ready in front of me.. and 3:05pm still could not access the tickets. So, I had return to work and just continuously check the site. Refreshing the feed like every 5 minutes. Then, finally, around 3:30pm, I saw it open. By the time I got my ticket by 3:49pm, certain seats were taken already. But I got the VIP package I aimed for, so, that's good.
I told my family in our group chat, that I got concert tickets for Jackson Wang. My brother asked, who and if I was going alone. I said, yes, going by myself. Then, my mum asks why I did not invite her to join and gave me a teary emoticon. I told her, that I did not buy the regular ticket, so to purchase for 2 people will be way too expensive, that it's not the same as the fan meeting she went with me a few years ago, that he will be singing mainly his English songs, and that I don't think her age is appropriate for his type of performance.. Knowing that her English is not that good, I don't think she'll be able to "enjoy" the concert.. and since it's not like she's a fan, I think it'd be a waste, even if I had her come with me in the VIP package. The VIP package consists of: Access to soundcheck, VIP Laminates & lanyard, tour merchandise, like poster/tote. There was suppose to be VIP 1 and VIP 2 packages, I got the second one. VIP had extra perks: 1-on-1 photo with him, autographed VIP card. But since I don't like being in pictures, I did not aim to purchase that one. I figure, I might be able to see him close during soundcheck too.. So, that's good enough for me. And with the VIP seats, they're the Floor Section. So, that should be fairly close to the stage.
Now comes the countdown to April 5th, 2026! I don't even when was the last time I went to a concert and to see who.. The recent ones, were just fan meetings, that included singing. And those were in a small theatre venue. That was a few years back, one of them, I went with my mum, the other, with two other buddies.
@bestVase7265
I am excited for you that you got the ticket. It sounds like it will be a great experience. And it is also fine to buy a single ticket package. There will be other events to go to with family. You enjoy this one yourself. @Jaeteuk
It will be a good treat for myself. I'll be in my last month of teaching, a good break from class. I think I'll enjoy it for sure, but I'm unlike normal fans.. as I like him for who he is. Yes, I like his singing, as he's got unique vocals, but, I haven't really listened to his songs.. His songs tell his life story, and to me, just by looking at him, through his social media accounts, going on variety shows, and watching videos of him in interviews, I can already see the things he's gone through/going through. I don't need to listen to his songs to know.. I'm just afraid I might get emotional during his concert, so, going to bring Kleenex with me.
I really can't remember when was the last time I went to a concert where I paid for my own tickets.. I remember back then, I bought like the cheapest ones, that were like $79 plus tax.. Must've been in my early 20s. I don't even quite remember who I saw, but, I believe I went with my cousin back then, before she got married, so it might've been in my late teens.
Talking about events, there had been some Classical performances in my city recently, but they landed on days I worked, and the show starts in the evening. But that would've been nice, to take my mum along. I have a soft spot for Classical music. When I went on the Alaskan Cruise with my mum in September 2024, I remember for one of the days, we went to a bar, as there was a pianist and violinist performance on Classical music.. Loved it. Reminds me, when I go to the Mexican cruise with my parents end of January 2026 (a week before I start teaching), I'll have to see if there are any performances. I'll be flying out on my Birthday, stay a night in LA, before getting on the Cruise on the 24th. We tried to start my vacation earlier, from the 17th to 31st, but the 22nd was not available; if I were able to start my vacation earlier, then, we could've stayed at my Aunt's place for a week before getting on the Cruise. And I couldn't take that day off, so, we'll be flying out on the 23rd instead. Luckily that my vacation couldn't start on the 17th, because I ended up getting notified that the College will have a virtual meeting for the 21st, with all the Clinical Instructors. So, can't miss that.
So, I got home around 8:30pm tonight, and since I don't have food in the fridge to pack for dinner Sunday, I ended up ordering some food to be delivered. I made the order while still sitting in my car, in the garage. As the restaurant closes at 10pm, I figured I should make the order asap. I also ordered some food to eat as well. Ordered sushi to eat, couldn't finish it, had 5 pieces leftover (will eat them tomorrow before I leave for work), then, ordered a chicken teriyaki rice as my Sunday dinner.
It's past 10:30pm now, I just finished my coffee. Should start getting ready for bed. One more thing, on my way out to work this morning, I was stopped at a light, when the people walking across the street in front of me looked familiar. I saw them the past Monday, when I went for lunch with a couple (my parent's friends), and we saw them at the restaurant on our way out. So crossing the street, was the church couple that hosts the Fellowship Group for my parents. I told my mum about it, she said, because some grandma passed away recently, and they were at the other church helping out with the Celebration of Life service. And then, when I was halfway to the hospital, there was a stretch of road, where I saw a police officer pointing those speedometer gun at the cars.. he hid fairly well, leaning against a tree at a small side road. But, no cars had been caught, from my section. First time seeing them there, and first time, driving to work, and not coming across Ambulances with sirens passing by. My thoughts on seeing the police officer, was that they're probably needing to meet some quota of giving out tickets.. lolz
@bestVase7265
Both the cruise and the concert sound lovely. You are getting some well deserved rewards for all of your hard work.
A concert on the cruise would also be quite nice. Maybe you can also look for some type of classical concert to go to with your mom later in the spring or summer.@Jaeteuk
So, I went to the College this morning to pick up my Instructor Package. I'm home and looking it over now. It basically consists of, the attendance sheet, printouts for student's presentation and journal prompts. As well as evaluation packages, 6 copies each, as I will have six students. I thought there'd be a schedule of when the Presentations are due, but it's not in the package, so I might have to check online to see if there's an outline for the Clinical portion.
Sounds like things are moving forward in a good direction. @Jaeteuk
Over the past weekend, my brother went out for breakfast with a family friend. They used to meet up for breakfast at least once a month, but since he moved out further, they only meet up once every few months. The next day, my mum told me that the family friend announced that his younger brother got married on Boxing Day. We were all surprised, and didn't even know he was dating. Apparently, they met online, and he even had flown to the Philippines to meet her and that their relationship had gone on for 2 years already.
Today, I joined my parents for lunch with my cousins. My younger cousin who moved to New York with his girlfriend early 2025, nearing the end of our meal, my Aunt announced that his girlfriend is pregnant. My Uncle and Aunt will become grandparents in May 2026. This was another surprise, as I remember when he first moved to New York, he was telling his mum that they wouldn't end up with a kid before marriage. So, amongst the children within my generation (our parents' children), this cousin is the youngest. He's only 30, and became the first to have a kid before marriage. My other cousin, who is 2 years older than him, he married first, before having a son. He's been married for 2 years, but at least for him, the news didn't come as a surprise.
With this cousin, none of us thought he'd like to busy lifestyle of New York, and yet, he earns the most and can afford renting. He had always been the quiet one when we gather for meals on special dates (Christmas and Chinese New Years), always have his phone in hand, and hardly ever talks to anybody. After all these years, he's still the same. But like others have said, maybe when he's with his same-aged friends, he's more talkative. But you know, as the one who earns the most in my generation, we had always thought there should be at least one time, where he pays for the meal. During our car ride home, my mum said that she was a bit disappointed, as my Aunt didn't teach him to buy things for the elders (my other Aunt and my parents). As my Uncle is the younger brother of my dad, so, my parents and my other Aunt (who's the eldest), is like the elders of that cousin. My mum says, since we don't see him that often anymore, he expected that my Aunt would tell him, that out of manners, he should buy them something. And not be empty-handed, also, especially when his mum made the announcement that his girlfriend is pregnant. They should've asked the girl to come for the meal and meet us too. Like meet the dad's side of the family. Maybe during Chinese New Years, we might be able to meet her then? We'll see, her baby bump would be bigger by then, if she's due in May 2026.
Anyways..
You know, my mum didn't mention about the concert ticket I bought again. So, I won't say anything. I'm sure if she wants, she could find out possibly how much I might've paid for tickets, when I already told her it's not the regular ticket I bought. Actually, the other day, I tried to open my e-ticket, see if I could download it ahead of time, it wouldn't load.. So, I'll have to try again maybe closer to the day. It says to download it to the wallet (which I don't use my phone's wallet). I don't believe that it's safe to keep my credit cards on an electronic device. I like physical cards. But with the ticket, I'll have to see if I could open it and take a screenshot or something later on.
Hope your New Year is more settling and less stressful~
Sometimes there are lots of unexpected surprises, especially when people get together who haven't seen one another in a while. But those were lots of good surprises ultimately.
I am not sure that generosity is something that can always be taught if someone doesn't want to learn it. Maybe it is that way with your cousin. There certainly are lots of people who are self-absorbed. But having a child may change that entirely. People also learn things at different ages.
My holidays were overall okay and my family was helpful. My dad is still hanging in there but he sleeps almost all the time. My medical stuff (the gynecological testing for cancer (a 5 month wait)) and my bad eyes (new cataracts have formed) are still pretty challenging. But I keep trying. @Jaeteuk
Very unexpected surprises for sure. With the family friend, my parents had known their parents since the years before my brother and I were born, back in Hong Kong. They had 3 children, their eldest daughter, passed away several years ago, as her cancer returned. The middle child, the son that my brother had breakfast with, although he married several years ago, we didn't know until the wife was pregnant. As there was no wedding invitation, but they did end up having a dinner with us for the announcement. So, I'm not highly surprised with the youngest getting married, as a sudden news. The family friend, the Uncle, he's also recovering from cancer. So, my parents meet with them once a month for a meal. They meet next week, I believe. You know, I hope their grandkids don't get cancer either, especially if it runs in the family. The Auntie had lumbar cancer in her 20s, and survived. That was what the eldest daughter had too, she was free of it for like 10 years, and it decided to come back and was more aggressive, spreading quickly. She was engaged back then, but the fiance's parents didn't want the guy to be a husband of a wife who may not live long.. so, I think the heartbreak also played a role in her health.
My cousin, she's a really horrible person. Especially since she married, treats my Aunt like her slave. She's adopted too, almost since birth. My Aunt worked a couple of jobs back then to raise her in Hong Kong, and give her piano lessons (of which she ended up with a Major in Music). She was my piano teacher at one point during my high school years too. Have you ever heard of a new parent who doesn't care for her own baby, from the day they are allowed to go home after giving birth? Both her sons (2 years apart), slept in my Aunt's bedroom. She was the one who woke up in the middle of the night to feed them if they got hungry. That's where their crib was kept. Honestly, it could also have been my Aunt's idea, as she doesn't want the crying babies to disturb her daughter's sleep. But as a parent, I would think the mum and dad should take care of a newborn. Why else would you have a kid if you don't even like taking care of them? And her way of teaching her sons, it's going to be problematic when they are adults and walking into the workforce. Her give and take parenting (if you do this for this long, you get this as a reward). Everything is done like this, and she said with her eldest, she always has to say the opposite of what she wants him to do, or he doesn't listen. The eldest also has a bad temper. While her younger one is on the Autism spectrum. The other day, my mum told me that after our meal, when we were walking together to the retail shop, she spoke with her kids, and they totally ignored her. My mum was telling me, that they had no manners to those older than them. It's not taught by my cousin, or they didn't learn it from their parents when growing up. You know how kids are like sponges, they learn and absorb how their parents react/talk.
Gynaecological testing for cancer? Is this part of the annual physical check-up? 5 month wait is not bad. Oh no, new cataracts.. I thought once you get rid of them, then you're good. My mum's friends had theirs removed and didn't have any new formations of them.
The hospital will be back to normal workflow on Monday, so this weekend will still be quiet. My Supervisor planned ahead with the assignment for the staff for the months I'll be teaching. So, yesterday, I took pictures of them, so, I get an idea how to arrange my students in the different workstations. There are only some staff who will be good buddies. So, I'll have to look into that more and see if I can make up a rough assignment for my students. But I might not be able to finalize anything until they day of, in case someone calls in sick. So, I'll have to arrive earlier each day, to check the physical assignment, then, assign my students. Later today, there won't be much incubators to clean, my Supervisor suggested I go online to send the request of the leave of absences for my teaching period. So, I'll do that in the beginning, if there's nothing to clean.
@bestVase7265
It is very true that poor parenting can play a critical role. You hadn't explained the whole situation earlier. One needs to give children both responsibility and kindness.
It sounds like you are thinking nicely in terms of your upcoming class. You are right that you will find certain pairings will work better than others. I try to rotate mine often so if there is a problem student that no one ends up with that person in every class. Flexibility is key.
No the cancer screening is not part of an annual exam. It is actual surgery based upon some slightly off results of testing in August. So I have been worried since then.
The eye thing is related to my vitrectomy surgery on the macular hole from last July. That was an emergency surgery and I had to spend three days not moving day or night with a gas bubble in my eye. I had a month or two where I could see and now I am back to partial blindness because the cataract developed because of the gas bubble. But it is starting to look like there is a cataract on the other eye that is developing because it has been working so hard. However, I can't get in to see anyone to get things confirmed possibly until February. By the time I get surgery on the eyes and recover, it will be about a year of not being able to see most likely. @Jaeteuk@JaeteukLet's just say, we all disagree with how my Cousin teaches her kids. Everything is very extreme, and to be always arguing with my Aunt (her mum), the kids see this, and I believe will become a trauma for them. Learn from my cousin, how to treat an elderly person, with disrespect and talking back at them. Makes me think, maybe that's why when my mum tried to talk to them, they didn't answer. Because at home, that is not how they see their mum talks to Grandma. I just have a bad feeling with the kids when they become adults.
Yes, the current assignment my Supervisor gave me, just gives me a rough idea whom I can pair my students with. I first need to meet them and see who they are (personality-wise), and then make any needed adjustments on whom I should pair them with. I also needed to check daily, before class starts, to see if there had been any sick calls with the staff. But, at least, I know who is on vacation and who is working. Now that I have 5 students instead of 6, makes it a little easier to assign them at the different work stations.
Sorry to hear about the cancer screening, it must be the hardest time to wait and worry about whether or not anything has progressed further. I hope your eyes don't bother you too much, have you taken time off from your classes, so your eyes get the rest they need? It's difficult to imagine what it's like to be partially blind, almost like how my Aunt is finally using a hearing aid for one of her ears. Her left ear had not been able to hear for maybe close to two decades, with her right ear also losing hearing. The last time I had lunch with her, it was only then, I saw her with a hearing aid for her right ear. At least, she can hear from one side again. I honestly don't know how she still doesn't have her driver's license suspended. Although she hardly drives now, and takes the Skytrain instead, but her license should be taken away from her. Like she won't be able to hear sirens coming from the left side when she drives, as she says she doesn't always wear the hearing aid. It's not safe. I remember when she first lost her hearing in her left ear, with little hearing left in her right ear. She once told a story that she was crossing the pedestrian once, and there was a Fire Engine with sirens on driving to where she was crossing, and she didn't hear it. Apparently back then, my cousin had to wave her over to quickly cross, otherwise she'd be in the way.
Anyways, take care. Don't overuse your eyes.
@bestVase7265
We should definitely respect our elders whenever possible and notice when they are suffering and need help. But that can also be a burden on some days.
You will be a great teacher for your students I am sure. You are preparing well.
I am also prepping my next semester which starts at the end of January. I have been on partial leave since the end of November but that just kept me out of the classroom. I still did all of my grading and I have no choice but to prepare for my upcoming classes. Thus I am still reading quite a bit, but I try to take breaks and I don't drive any time that I don't feel safe.
I am regretting taking the partial leave of absence because my dad didn't die like I had anticipated after not eating for a week. He is now eating fairly well and is communicating more. Thus I have no idea when he might falter again. And because I am on leave, people at work really won't talk to me so I can't get issues resolved before I return. But it is what it is. I am trying hard to accept things more. @Jaeteuk
Just a little heads up. I'll be away on a Mexican Cruise with my parents. Flying out on my Birthday, the coming Friday. Staying a night at my Aunt's then, she will drop us off at the port where we board the cruise. For the past week, I've been making some last minute preparations for my class. I've also sent out an email to my students as welcome message and explained briefly what will be happening on their first day, with Orientation. Monday, I'll be busy for the first half of the day. With a dental cleaning appointment, a haircut, and needing to drop by the college to pick up my name tag.
Wednesday, I have a virtual meeting with other Clinical Instructors. A paid 30-minute meeting. I couldn't get Thursday off from work, so, I have to work it. Then we have an early flight on Friday, meaning we need to be at the airport by 6am, as we need to be at the airport 2 hours prior to our flight. I'm back on the 31st, and have taken the Sunday off. Then, class will start on Monday, February 2nd at 10am.
I'll drop by after my trip to share with you. Finally a "happier" birthday for me.
That sounds utterly awesome! I hope you have a great cruise. You are well prepped to start teaching as well.
I finally have a bit better news - I had the gynecology surgery and now know that I don't have cancer after waiting 5 months for the test. Now I can just worry about my eyes and my dad. @Jaeteuk
What a relief on your end! I had a dental cleaning appointment on Monday, and my dentist says that she needs to take a biopsy of lesion she discovered on my upper right palate, it's 3x3x2mm in size. I asked if it can be done in May, as I won't be able to have time for an appointment once I start teaching. She says it's no rush, so I'm thinking what she thinks it might be, is not something serious. At first, the receptionist says there was a slot for today, but I said because I was going on vacation by the end of the week, I don't want to get a biopsy done and then worry about the results during vacation. I called my mum after my appointment and told her, she says she had it done before, in her cheek, and says it's a small procedure and there wasn't much discomfort. I don't mind the pain, I just don't want to have to worry about the results while on vacation. Pain, I can tolerate.
On Monday, when I went to the college to get my name tag, I spoke with Program Coordinator and she told me that with Orientation, Instructors used at least 3 days to walk the students through the department.. Good thing she told me, here, I thought Orientation was only for one day.. She also gifted me a water bottle, with the College logo.. she says she always give her new instructors gifts from the bookstore. I was going to choose a small one, but she picked the biggest volume one. Oh, I also invited my mum to take the Skytrain with me, as there was a Bakery and Cafe I wanted to try. So I invited her to join me for the treat. I also learned that my brother's new office is write across the street of the Skytrain Terminal station and that Bakery is across the street from his office too (diagonal to the Station). He says when it's someone birthday in the office, that's where they buy their cakes. That place was so packed, and line up to the door at all times. It's also open 24/7. My mum ended up buying 6 cookies and a scone to go, and we brought it home for my dad to try. Too bad there is no location near my house.
@bestVase7265
It sounds like things continue to go well in terms of your trip and your new job.
Get the biopsy when it feels right for you. In my case, they gave me no choice but to wait. And now I have to wait on the eyes. It will be early March before both eyes have surgery but I am having serious issues reading and driving. One eye is seeing 20/100 and the other 20/50. It will be a challenging month. @Jaeteuk
Oh my.. the months will go by so slow for you.. vision issues when driving is dangerous.. be careful!
It will be okay. You focus on having a great trip. You deserve it. @Jaeteuk
I'm back! Got home with Uber around 5:30pm. Took a shower, brother made spaghetti sauce, so we just cooked some pasta and prepared the salad. It's 8:30pm now.. will need to get ready for bed.. woke up at 5am this morning (dad messed up the alarm, suppose to wake up at 6am).. as we had to have breakfast on the cruise and walked off with our luggage before 8am... During our breakfast in the buffet, we witnessed a fire close to the Cruise Terminal happen right in front of our eyes! It was a block away from one of the entrances to the terminal parking lot.. Many fire engines were around the building on the corner.. Once we got into the Uber, the driver said, he was parked a block above the place and suddenly saw many police cars and fire engines.. I asked what kind of building it was, driver said it was a wooden home, like 100 years old.. and didn't have any residents.. I hope there really weren't any casualties, the whole place was up in flames. At first, I thought they had put it out, but then, I saw the flames again. By the time we left the cruise, it did look like they had it under control.. and since I didn't see any ambulances around, I'm guess there really were no casualties in the fire.
Tomorrow, I'll need to do the laundry and wash my clothes.. and double-check all my paperwork that is needed for my students on Monday. The first week of February will all be on Orientation. So, the college confirmed with me on Wednesday, that the sixth student has finally registered for the Clinical.. so, I officially have six students in my first cohort.
I also made an appointment for an interview for the Nexus card.. but it'll have to be during Easter Monday.. as all the Saturdays have been booked, and since with the class, I'll be teaching Monday to Friday.. as a Stat holiday for Easter Monday, and they have openings for the interview, I chose that day.
This birthday was one to remember as well. Since I flew out on my birthday, and spent it with my Aunt who lives only an hour drive away from LAX. They took us out for lunch, as that was when we arrived at SNA, and went grocery shopping for our dinner and she insisted to buy me a cake. So I chose a small one and my uncle ended opening a bottle of champagne to go with cake. They drove us to the Cruise terminal the next day (Saturday morning).
I'm already thinking about my vacation for 2027. I might go visit my cousin, she has her own place in Tuscon.. I actually heard from my parents that she has one guest room, so, I contacted her and asked if I could visit her in my next vacation.. and she suggested that the best time to go is between October and April.. Which works out for me.. I could choose the same time as this year, and go in January.. If my Instructor role goes well, I'm hoping to teach 2 of the 3 terms each year.. Teaching the February and October terms. And going to her place in January, I can get away from the cold and rain at home.. It will be an adventure for me though.. it would be the first time I fly alone.. and so far away, with the need to connect flights..
We're only in February now.. I won't need to make a decision until later this year, when we need to plan for our 2027 vacation.. Lot's of time to think about it.. and do research to see how much it'd cost me for the airfare.. but with this new Instructor role, the pay per hour is nearly 2x more than what I current get.. So, by January 2027, I should be able to afford airfare to my cousin.
Anyways, it's just past 9pm now.. time for bed. Hope you have been well the past week, that your eyes aren't giving you too much discomfort.
There is lots of great stuff in your message. I am so glad that you had fun on your cruise and seeing everyone for your birthday.
You are getting more and more confident and it really shows. I think your classes will go well. I started two of mine last week. One has 17 students and the other 18. The early morning one may be a little quiet. We will see. Tomorrow I have my last new class of 9 students. We only meet an hour a week and it is more of an academic/personal support class. It will be much better with 9 students than the 2 I had last semester.
I think Arizona for next year in January sounds great. You will be able to handle the flights fine, even with a transfer.
I am adapting to the bad eyes and we will see how things go over the next month. Work has been really rough in the last week in terms of trauma, but I am going to hope that time will heal some of those raw wounds so I can start to finally feel a little better. The last year and a half or so have been really hard. @Jaeteuk
Tonight I'll need to sleep earlier.. as I need to prepare a lunch in the morning. I'll need to leave my house around 7:40am, to catch the last train that leaves at 8:10am. Hopefully there's empty stalls in the park and ride, I haven't taken the train on Mondays before.. Only did a test run on a Thursday. I'm excited for tomorrow. I emailed another instructor during my trip, asking what she did on her first day with the students in her previous batch. So, I have a better idea what I'll be doing and what needs to be covered on the first day.
Maybe by 2027, with the increased confidence, I will be okay with the flights and a transfer. Maybe I'll be brave enough to ask for additional help if needed.
I'll keep you updated on my new role and experiences, and maybe I could get some tips from you too.
@bestVase7265
I bet that you had a solid first class. That's all you can hope for. Some days will go more smoothly than others but everyone is generally excited at the start. My classes today went fine. We will see how things are on Thursday. One day at a time. @Jaeteuk
Today, my students finally got a chance to meet our Manager. And the nurse that came to work for the morning shift, and another nurse that works the evening shift. So now, the students have met all four RN's, the Manager and one of our Supervisors. The afternoon Supervisor went on vacation and will be back just before Chinese New Years.
It looks like I might not need to take the whole week of Orientation, I will see how much I can show my students on Wed and Thurs, then, decide at the end of Thursday, if I need to use Friday to complete it. Otherwise, I could start having my students learn through the buddy system.
@bestVase7265
Sounds good. Some students pick up things faster than others and it is totally different every time. I make sure that mine do regular reflections (mini quizzes also work well) to make sure that the details you have given actually stick in their heads.
I had one today who insisted she had no idea how to do the assignment because we hadn't gone over it in class and it wasn't in the syllabus. But I had gone over it and there were two paragraphs on it in the syllabus. So I copied it directly from the syllabus with a note of "Here is what the syllabus says." @Jaeteuk
I had a student like that yesterday too. They were asking me about another exam, and I mentioned there were sections that are on one topic only, one student said, she didn't even bother reading about it in their textbook, as it didn't seem important. So, when I talked about it, she looked clueless.
Yes, I can tell that some are visual learners, while others take notes and remember material by text. I'm curious to see how they will be performing during the Clinical.
Each of them will be different in terms of the clinical. It really points out what learning is - a combination of what the instructor says and what the student is willing to learn. It took me a while to accept that not all students were going to pass because they weren't all ready or willing to do the work. That isn't your fault. Sometimes they have some growing up to do. @Jaeteuk
So, the evening Supervisor has returned from vacation this past week, after our Stat on Monday. So, arranging the staff's assignment to align with my students is easier, than working with the morning Supervisor. I was told yesterday though, that from now until the end of March, the staff will encounter more days that would be short-staffed. As the flu season is very strong this year, and people are getting burnt out from all the OT they are picking up..
There will be more days like yesterday, where we were short-staffed by three people in the morning, so, I had to take two of my students under my own wing to teach them.. Which ended up being more tiring for me.. Of course, during the class I felt energized, it usually doesn't really kick in until my ride back home on the train.. my back felt sore and I almost fell asleep. But I went to treat myself for sushi, as both my brother and parents had dinner plans with their friends. So, it was nice to have some alone time, eating something I like.. I'd go to the Korean restaurant, but the past couple weeks, when I went there after work, I always ended up ordering take-out because it has been a full-house around 7pm on Fridays. So, I just order take-out, and use the food as my lunch for the next day.
I also got my first pay check as an Instructor, so must treat myself after a long, tiring day of class yesterday. Oh, on the train, ever since I started this new role, I've been seeing the same girl on my way home. I always end up sitting in the same spot as she's there usually 3 times a week. So, the day before, we finally talked to each other. At first we'd greet each other with a wave, but never had a conversation. But the day before, there was still a lot of time until the train departed, so we talked. I haven't seen her since last Friday until seeing her the past Thursday.. So, it turns out she's an Accountant, that works a couple of skytrain stops away.. that she works partial days in the office and at home, every 2 weeks, need to go into the office for 5 days.. So, she explained that she usually works remotely on Mondays and Fridays.. So, I shared what I do as well.. Except I just said I am instructor at a hospital, didn't give her the department, or what I was teaching though. As I figured she probably wouldn't have heard about it.. She gets off the train at the stop after mine.
For once, I was the one feeling sleeping on the train, as she's always the one that dozes off, while holding her phone.. She's usually watching videos, while on the train, I'm doing some paperwork for my students, or taking notes for things I want to tell my students in the next day. As in Instructor, I think the most difficult part so far, is pairing my students up with good staff members that are good teachers.. Being short-staffed doesn't help either.
It is great that you are doing well teaching. Yes, it is very exhausting because you use tons of energy while doing it almost without realizing it. I usually have a snack and something to drink right afterwards.
I am glad that you reached out to a fellow commuter on the train. What a nice way to make a friend.
It is tough getting the right student with the right mentor, but remember that it can be a little hit or miss at times. You are doing your best. @Jaeteuk
I'm just so excited and really love my job, that I honestly don't feel tired while I'm teaching, or, I should say, even when I get off the train, and is walking to the hospital from the station, I already feel my energy and adrenaline rushing in. Sometimes, I even get the urge to hop with excitement. I do eat and snack during breaks, and drink plenty of water. Especially when I need to step in and do the instructing myself, I get so thirsty with talking so much!
It sure is tough, especially when we're short-staffed, with flu season this year. There had been many sick calls. So, there may be more days where I'd need to take the students myself to teach them the different stations. Both the Supervisors and I have our own list of staff members, which ones would be good teachers, and which ones to avoid pairing with my students. But with the shortage, sometimes, I'm forced to pair them with those staff.
I'm going to ask the College to see if I'm allowed to step-in to teach them myself with the shortages. Working yesterday, I was asked to do another station aside from what I was originally assigned to do. Which is sometimes a good change, especially when in that area, there were three new hires being oriented by three staff. So, I get to help out with that area, as they would be slower. But we did finish many things and had nothing left to do in the last 30 minutes.
You know what I find the most difficult, is assigning them to stations with good mentors. I'm working on next week's and March's assignment now. It's like a draft though, as there's always staff calling in sick, I still need to check it on a day-to-day basis to see if I need to make rearrangements. The problem is, if changes are needed to be made, it screws up the stations of other students. As I need to arrange them to 10 different stations, and then repeat them. So, now, I have days where it overlaps with 2 students in the same station.. Which I'm not sure if I can do..
@bestVase7265
You are going to arrange things just fine. You are good on details.
I smiled when I read how happy all of this is making you. You are finding your true life calling. @Jaeteuk
You know what I'm hoping what all of this will result in?.. Is attract the right guy.. If I believe in the Chinese Horoscopes, I'm suppose to meet my destined this year, between April and October..
You know, I'm also thinking about teaching all three terms, rather than just two terms.. I'd make a lot more money, compared to the part-time line with the hospital. But, of course, I would still keep working my Saturdays, and any Stat holiday if it lands on days of my regular shifts. So, I'm excited about my life, for once.
In the past, I always question myself, "What is true happiness?".. Nowadays, I think I finally have the answer to that. After decades of questioning what it is, this is it!
Glad I made you smile, with all the struggles you're dealing with now. A smile eases your mind, even if it's temporarily.
@bestVase7265
Keep being excited. It is good to have those moments. I will get mine back eventually. @Jaeteuk
I think the only downside is my physical and emotional doesn't get much of a rest. So, when I'm not working on Sundays, or even the ride home, I feel more drained and exhausted. Which I think is the recipe of getting sick more easily.. the strain while working, then the more relaxing state when I'm not at the hospital. Although the change is small, I think it still can cause damage.
One of my students told me that I looked stressed. I think it's the good stress though. They were shocked that I could only sleep for a maximum of six hours, or that I could still function with 4-5 hours. One of the younger students joked that's because we don't need to sleep as much when we get older. I'm 15 years her senior.
Yes, you will get your excitement back in the future too. I'm sure of it.
We will see. Right now I face two eye surgeries starting Monday and then again a week later. We visit mom and dad tomorrow. Dad has been on hospice 6 months now. And I am unluckily involved in a hostile work environment claim that was brought on my behalf that I didn't want. So now I can't communicate with many of my colleagues and feel extremely isolated. I spent 2 hours with a lawyer on Monday. @Jaeteuk
Oh my goodness.. you have so much going on that it's not humanely fair.
@bestVase7265
Thanks. Sometimes we don't get what is humanely fair. Hopefully I can start moving towards a more even, healing existence tomorrow with the first surgery. @Jaeteuk
How's the recovery from eye surgery going? I thought I'd give you some rest for your eyes after surgery, so I didn't make any posts.
I went home halfway through class on Wednesday, as I had a fever Tuesday night and I was feeling hot and cold all morning. So, my students get to go home early too. We left at 1pm and I told the College I needed another day off. So, I'll return to class on Friday, and the presentations from the other three students will be done together. I'm just waiting for the College to confirm, if I need to make up for the time that I was sick for the students, meaning, adding an hour to our Clinical for 10 days.
I rested mostly in bed today. Woke up to eat and drink fluids. I couldn't sleep last night though, woke up every hour, coughing. I guess Tylenol doesn't work for me. Will need to take something else tonight to sleep. My students think it's because of stress that my immune system declined, on top of days that were raining and cold. Stress for that one student who I see no improvement, and we're halfway through Clinical. Next week, I'll be going over their mid-evaluations. With that student, I'll need to state everything that is still lacking, and make it clear to her, if improvement is not seen by the end, she may not pass the program.
I hope that you feel better soon. It is not easy teaching and being sick. I have had to do it many times.
Well, my eyes are okay overall, but the rest of my life has been disastrous and very stressful. My mother was in a major car accident between my two surgeries in which she had a seizure while driving, hit a sign, ran over a traffic circle, and slammed into a tree. Luckily she was going very slowly but there were small ponds on either side so she could have died. She had no internal injuries, but they found preexisting blood clots and they don't know the cause of them. So now we are seeing four doctors and doing all of their tests. And I live three hours away. She is also not herself at all after the hospitalization. She is barely eating and has lots of brain fog. We think it is the new epilepsy medication. So there is a huge amount of details to handle. This is not even counting my dad in hospice who is now getting no visits or phone calls.
My anxiety over everything has led to some bad lower back issues. I currently can't sit down. I am hoping that will improve in the next few days as we go back to visit again for another appointment and I start teaching again. I keep saying my bad luck has to change eventually. It has been a very, very rough year and a half. @Jaeteuk
I wore a mask all day, from the train ride, during class, then, train ride back home. Just a lot of dry coughing. This morning, I woke up with a slight headache, from all the coughing during the night. I will be calling in sick for my Saturday shift, the Supervisor says, I could call in the morning. So, I'll do that. I do not have the energy to do what I need to do for my shift, so, better not work it. I could use that extra day of rest. Others say I should take the rest of the week off, but for my students, I can't. Otherwise, if I'll need to make up for the hours I already took off, it'll be too much for them. I'll just need to wear a mask and have my cough drops handy.
Oh my gosh, very lucky that she was driving slowly.. Hmm.. preexisting blood clots is more concerning.. hopefully the doctors find something soon. Maybe she shouldn't be driving with the seizures happening, those are usually sudden and can happen anytime, right?
Can't sit down?! That's horrible! So you're either standing or lying down? That sounds so uncomfortable. Teaching will hopefully keep your mind busy, I hope it won't cause more stress though. There is no bad luck that goes on forever, you will see a light when it comes.
@bestVase7265
She isn't allowed to drive for 6 months anyway but I doubt she will get much beyond a golf cart for the rest of her life. She has been an epileptic since she was 13 and has only had 4-5 seizures since she was 21. Her last one was 21-25 years ago.
But she has also been on the same meds since age 13. Changing it at age 85 is also dicey. I agree that the blood clots need to be worked out. We will see how many more tests they order at the hematologist tomorrow. We will be here for that appointment but not for the pulmonologist the following day. That one will be by phone.
I survived the car ride except for the last half hour or so. We will see how tomorrow goes with the doctor appointment and the drive back. I have to teach tomorrow night. @Jaeteuk
Oh wow, that's not a lot of seizures since her diagnosis. Ah yes, changing meds now will not be a good idea indeed.
That reminded me, I had a previous coworker who's son was diagnosed with that condition where they don't feel pain. Apparently her dad has the same condition and had to be on medications too. She was so worried for her son, whenever he hits his head or the other time, falling off the bed and hitting his head on the bed frame. So both her son and her dad are on the same medications.
Good luck with your first teaching class!
I have to return to my class on Monday too, going to be wearing a mask all day. Still coughing, but I really hope I recover before going to the concert that I bought VIP tickets for. Going to be on April 5th.
@bestVase7265
We cut her dosage in half even before the doctor gave permission. She was markedly better two days later and now is communicating more and eating. As long as she stays seizure free we will be good. Lots more testing from all the different doctors and it is going to be hard to manage it all. But I am trying.
My classes are the same groups as before spring break. Two out of three went pretty well in the last two days despite my exhaustion. The last one they didn't do the reading which made things pretty flat. @Jaeteuk
I have one more mid-evaluation to do, my most concerning student. The college requires me to have a written form as well, so through email. I started writing it up this morning, but I need to take a look at her evaluation so that the two aligns, which I will try to work more on it on Wednesday. So, I told my student that I'll go over it on Thursday.
I have my phone-call appointment with my doctor for my coughs. When I got home from class today, my mum had another type of cough syrup in hand, says it should help me sleep through the night. I just took it, as I was coughing as I had dinner, so she was like, just take it now (only 8:30pm when I took it). 9pm now, and I'm still coughing. Actually, last night, I tried sleeping sitting up, as I noticed I coughed lesser when sitting upright compared laying flat on my bed, but it's not entirely comfortable, and difficult to wrap myself in my blanket in an upright position. So, hopefully this new cough medicine will work, otherwise, I'll need the prescription type when I talk to my doctor tomorrow.
Then, she was like, clean up your computer room, as the internet guy is coming tomorrow. So, he might need to get under my table. I have papers everywhere.. but they are all useful notes. So, I'll just sort through them, or stick them all in a drawer or something.
I'm sleepy, so, I think I'll slowly make my way to bed now. I need to fill up my water bottle I keep by my bedside, for when I wake up coughing in the middle of the night. With my coughs, I've been filling my water bottles, by adding some salt in it. I read somewhere that it could help with keeping hydrated and maybe could fight off something when it's in my system.
@bestVase7265
Hopefully the coughing will let up soon. I am sure that is no fun. For me, the only thing that works well are Ricola cough drops. But you literally need to have them pretty constantly. @Jaeteuk
Ricola is all I use, but since they are considered medicated, in a day, the maximum is only 6 drops. So, I can't really eat too much of it. I usually need one during the train ride, so that I'm not coughing non-stop in a train that is full packed with other passengers. Then, throughout my Clinical class, I need to spread it out as to when to eat one.
The night before, I was finally able to sleep through the night. But last night, the coughs came back. Last Wednesday, with a new prescription of an inhaler, the Pharmacist explained it has two ingredients, one, of which should work right away, which is opening up my airways. The second, he says it should work in a week, helping with the inflammation. My doctor considers that the root cause of my coughs. It also doesn't help that I have a history of asthma, so, all my colds always ends up with lots of coughing, that lasts a long time.
It's just more important now to recover, because of that concert I paid a lot of money for a VIP ticket. I really don't want to be wearing a mask during it.
The next two weeks, I'll be having a morning class. Needing to take the first train at 6:10am. Meaning, if I want to eat something before leaving the house around 5:50am, I'll have to wake up quite early. So, I've set my alarm for 4:45am. Luckily because of Good Friday and Easter Monday, class-wise, they are two 4-day weeks. Except, I'm still working for 6 days, as my Supervisor scheduled me for Good Friday (which is nice, as it's considered as a Super Stat, meaning pay is x2), and I'll be working my usual Saturday. With the concert on Easter Sunday, I'm still trying to figure out how to get home. I thought about reserving an Uber ride, but not knowing what time the concert would end, I'm not sure what time I should reserve it for. It starts at 8pm, and it's more than an hour's car ride away from my home.
@bestVase7265
I wish you good healing before your concert. I bet it will be awesome.@Jaeteuk
So, it's Good Friday. I get to work! It's a Super Stat, which means it's x2 the pay. But I'm working the afternoon shift, 3-11pm. It should've been 3:30pm to 11:30pm, but because I need a 12-hr window in between my Saturday shift, my supervisor had me start 30 minutes earlier. I also need to arrive a bit earlier, before the nurse leaves for the day. As I need to grab something from the Supervisor's office, and the nurse has access and I don't. I mean, I could wait until tomorrow, since I'll be driving both days. But, I thought I'd get it a day earlier. I need to start working on my final grading for my students.
Can you believe it, there's only 3 more weeks left! Yesterday, one my Supervisors had a chat with me. She revealed, Management was hoping to hire all six students, but the three that I don't recommend, they observed with the same result. I think it is mainly because the hospital really needs more Casuals, as the permanent staff are constantly taking advantage of the overtime shifts. Meaning, they accept the overtime shift, then, end up calling in sick for them. That way, they get paid more. The other problem is, because these shifts are given based on seniority, the same staff member always takes it all. Leaving others with no chance of working any overtime shifts.
Also, during our discussion, she once again mentioned how two other staff had wanted to be Clinical Instructors too.. but, she did not feel they were good candidates. I then asked her, what was it in mean, that she felt I could be a good candidate? She said she base it on her intuition of a person when she first meets them. So, I said, was it during my interview then? She said I gave her a very positive vibe, that she felt that I'd be responsible and that I had potential to go further. She said, she just chose me, and went to the Manager and told her I'd be someone she'd appoint to be the Clinical Instructor for our site. She said, her decision, her gut feeling, and intuition is always on point. So, when she informed the Manager, she has already made her mind, and had spoken to me already. Her words made me feel honoured, that based on first impression, she trusted me and could see that I would be a good Clinical Instructor. I think, our personalities are similar to an extent, as we're both Aquarius, so gut feeling she gets when she reads people, I pick it up right away too.
I received an email yesterday in regards to pre-registering for early check-in for my VIP experience for Sunday's concert! I have to arrive by 3:45pm. Which means, I need to leave my house by 1:45pm, in case there's traffic. I will Uber. But this will also mean, there won't be time for dinner. So, I'll have to have a full lunch before I go. I plan to bring a lot of cough drops though, maybe a mask, in case I get into a coughing fit. I won't wear it yet though. Yes, I am still coughing. Actually, when I woke up this morning, I suddenly felt my throat super dry and my voice suddenly cracked. So, I don't think I'll be better by Sunday. I'll just bring a mask with me, just in case. But it'll make me stand out, because probably no one else would be wearing a mask during a concert! I wrote an encouragement letter, but most likely won't be able to give it to him. But I'll bring it anyways.
That all sounds like great stuff. They are already trusting you to sort the students properly and that is great. You are quite responsible and notice details which is exactly what they need. You will eventually get them more casuals because you are selecting ones who can do a good job and stick around.
I bet you will have a great concert experience. Focus on enjoying it. @Jaeteuk
I think my concert experience will be much different than the majority of fans that will be attending though. It will be more personal and unique. I haven't really listened to any of his songs, let alone, the album he is performing on this world tour. I support him for who he is. I know that his album consists of his journey, as there was a time when he went into a very dark place, and took a one-year hiatus from everything. When he was announcing his album, he shared that the lyrics were excerpts from his journalling, during those tough times.
As someone who's been through a lot emotionally and mentally, especially with my history of depression and other childhood traumas, I felt that if I listened to his songs, I'd be tears. To me, I don't need his songs, the lyrics, to feel what he has been through. Sometimes, when he posts pictures of himself, I already can see and feel what he is feeling deep inside, something that I feel he tries to hide at times. Just seeing that, and feeling it, it already saddens me. So, if I were to listen to his songs, I think I'd have a breakdown, as I'd feel his raw emotions too.
So, I worked that 3-11pm shift yesterday, I was so used to doing the morning class, earlier in the week, that I was already yawning by the time I started working. Hopefully I won't feel super tired/sleepy during the concert tomorrow. But lucky that it's Easter Monday the next day, don't have to worry about waking up at 4:45am.

However you connect to him or to his music or to his poetry is great. It is okay to go back and revisit some of your older emotions and trauma. They are what have made both you and the musician you are watching stronger.
I hope that you have an awesome time tonight. @Jaeteuk
Although I got the floor seating, I think I might be the only person that sat for the entire show. While everyone else stood up, whenever he came out on stage. I just stayed seated and watched the big screens. I was able to get glimpses of him while sitting, as there were times the people in the front left a small space. But sitting there, just seeing him, hearing his music for the first time, him giving his speeches. I felt it was well worth it, as for the soundcheck portion, it wasn't exactly what I expected. But, maybe I just misunderstood what it means. Would I do it again, probably not pay for the VIP pricing. The lanyard has his photo card and the free tote was nice. Thick material, and even has a zipper. Has a silhouette of his face, the tour name, and an inspiring phrase on the other side.

It sounds like you had a beautiful time. That is what matters. Hearing an inspiring musician sounds really nice. @Jaeteuk
So, remember how my dad wasn't feeling well the past Easter weekend, and my mum told him not to join the lunch with my Uncle on the past Monday? Well, I think I caught his virus that day.. as I ended up sitting beside him. I'm in my second round of being sick.. and I haven't even recovered from the previous one, with the coughing. Now, it's back to runny nose, and more coughs at nighttime.. it was finally getting better at night, being able to sleep through it.. now, that the coughs are back..
This is not a good time to be sick, again. In my last two weeks of class, this is supposedly the most stressful time for me. As I will be testing my students individually this coming week, and in our final week, I'll be grading them. I guess with the stress, it also decreases my immunity, as my stress always lead to disturbed sleep. I just took some medicine, will work on my grading, need to write comments on their evaluations. Don't have much time to sit and do this.
Sorry to hear. Sending peace.
Both of my parents are now very, very ill. It has been one of the roughest weekends that I have ever had. I may lose both of them in the next few months. @Jaeteuk
Oh my goodness, a sudden decline for both. It will be very tough for you. Sending you hope as well.
My mum told me to make another doctor's appointment, as the previous prescription of the inhaler is not working, and I only have 16 more doses left. My even purposely told me that this will help both opening up my airway, and fight the inflammation. As I have a history of asthma, I now have wheezing coughs, and sometimes, my chest would hurt. So, I made an in-clinic appointment, but she isn't available until next week. Luckily, as my last week of class, we'll be starting at 1pm. So, I can make the appointment for the morning, and still make it in time for class. Have her listen to my chest.
@bestVase7265
Hopefully you are feeling a little better now.
Mom is being transferred to rehab because she can finally move just a little without screaming in pain. But we still don't know about the cancer. @Jaeteuk
