Am I a pathological liar?

I have bpd and have always valued honesty and truthfulness. Which is why I was very upset when everyone has told me I lie all the time. My dad thinks I am a pathological liar as its a symptom of bpd. Am I? How do I know?

I also have bpd and this is a problem I had as well. I never believed that I was doing this until my husband recorded me during one of my moments of being mad and later when I was calmed he played it for me. I couldn't believe my own ears, it was a real eye opener for me. I have a bad history of twisting what the truth is or saying I didn't say or do something I did say or do. It's just a part of what bpd does to our brains it mixes everything up and we feel emotions much more than normal people. So no I don't think you are a pathological liar but I do think your brain moves a million miles a min and everything gets jumbled and confusing at times. It is something that can be overcome with the right help and being devoted to making those changes.

This one is a little harder to answer because of the nature of bpd. Everyone tells little white lies from time to time.

The problem with borderline is that it brings about these moods where you're not really you. Logically you know what you're feeling is irrational and that people don't actually hate you but emotionally... not so easy. In those moments it's really easy then to tell lies to try and make the other person stay.

Here's an example of when lying happens (reposted from bpdpoc.tumblr.com)
FP (favorite person): *talks to me all night*
me: they love me
FP: *doesn't text me back in the morning*
me: they hate me this was all a game I am a fool to think they ever loved me

It's really easy to go from that thought (they hate me this was all a game) to telling a lie to make them come back. Only exception is that they were never really gone in the first place.

People with bpd are often very afraid of abandonment and disapproval and will do whatever it takes to make sure neither of those things happen - including lie.

The good new is that it's a habit and habits can be overridden! Being more grounded and more able to handle the stress and fear / insecurities of abandonment and disapproval can help decrease the desire to lie. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) can strengthen these abilities and help you become more grounded.

Here's a small article on bpd and lying
