I don't understand my BPD
So I have BPD... And I can't process this.. I just don't understand why should I be difrent then others or how. Whats the line between normal feelings and mine. How you guys deeling with this? And how you can identify yourself among those things?
Have you been professionally diagnosed with it? I, too, struggle with BPD and I can say that the symptoms of this disorder might differ from one person to another. I'm all ears if you want to share your stories ❤
@Mausin I'm not an expert, but from what I've read there doesn't seem to be any clear line between normal feelings and how having BPD feels. There's a confusing overlap. This is why professional diagnosis is so important.
Another difficulty is that even the professionals disagree. For example, the official diagnosis in the US (DSM-5) says:
"A personality disorder is an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the individual's culture, is pervasive and inflexible, has an onset in adolescence or early adulthood, is stable over time, and leads to distress or impairment."
(It goes on to list the symptoms.)
But later in the same book there's an alternative definition, which is quite different. The World Health Organization has a different one again, and many professionals use a theory of emotional dysregulation that the other sources don't mention.
If you have a good therapist, then I think questions about exactly why and how you are different from others are worth spending time on so that you can process what's been going on. Unfortunately, if you have a not-so-good therapist then the focus might be on coping techniques and lifestyle tips instead.
