Hi, all.

I’ve lately been wondering if I possibly have BPD, but struggling with approaching my GP for support.

how did everyone else take this first step?

@mentalhealthmattersxo One way that I think has helped some people is to write down on paper just three or four of the most significant symptoms you have, and go to your GP to ask about those specific symptoms as a starting point. If the conversation is difficult for you, then you can simply hand over the piece of paper.

It's also useful to have in mind what you want your GP to do. For example, if you want a psychiatric assessment, write that down too. Some GPs always suggest antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication first, to see whether it helps and as part of the process of diagnosis. Some GPs suggest tests to rule out other factors before assuming you have a serious illness like BPD. Some GPs refer to a mental health professional straight away.
