BPD and my fears

I have BPD and I'm afraid of the future. Will it be messy? Will I be able to be stable, will I achieve something in life? Will anything matter if I feel empty in the end?

And will I feel loved? It all feels so distant. It feels like a dream.

It's not a pointless fear. I'm aware of the mess that I am. The instability and the inability to handle life is real. What will happen in long term? Who knows. And I'm scared.

Hi, thanks for reaching out. 💜 That makes sense what you're saying that there are these fears you're feeling, but they're not pointless or unrealistic. There are specific concerns and they feel like legitimate problems that are genuinely difficult to solve:

  • Can I have enough stability to handle life given how messy things are?
  • Can I have satisfying connections with people where I feel loved?
  • Can I somehow get to a place where I don't feel completely empty? (Kind of a deeper problem because it's like "even if I achieve all of my goals, does it really matter if I still feel empty?")

I feel like there's maybe a sequence to these. Like 1) if it were possible to have that stability and feel like things aren't as messy moment-to-moment, 2) then maybe it might feel more possible to have connections with people or participate in the world without things feeling as overwhelming, 3) and then that might start to ease some of the feeling of emptiness.

There are some therapeutic approaches for BPD that might be able to chip away at some of those problems. For example, DBT involves working on distress tolerance and emotion regulation (relevant to stability) and interpersonal effectiveness (relevant to relationships/loneliness).

Curious what your thoughts are about whether you feel like it's possible for things to get better, or if there's anything you've tried so far that's felt like it's helped even if only a little bit.
