Getting to know DPD more
Tw: Discussion, DPD, questions
Good morning everyone, It's InsightfulPhoenix and some even call me Phoe <3. I have come here to speak to you all about DPD, which is also known as Dependent Personality Disorder on a deeper level <3. Someone from a session requested of this information, and I am here to provide it in a little bit more context!
DPD is created from childhood trauma, and usually can lead to another form of attachment styles when an individual grows older due to whether the individual was raised in chaos, neglected whether emotionally or even physically. DPD can be hard to diagnose, because just as many other Personality Disorder it mimics and/or blends in with another disorder's symptoms. Below are some images that contain viable information on DPD <3. now that the definition and brief run down is out of the way let's truly begin, shall we?
Some of you may even ask, "We know the symptoms now, what are the characteristics?" Which is exactly what we are getting into now <3. The characteristics of DPD are indecisiveness, usually overall passive/submissive in their tone/approach to misunderstandings including conflict itself, not being able to have a disagreement with anyone or disagree with someone, sometimes even allowing someone else whether a trusted family member, romantic partner or friend to handle their personal matters this includes disagreements as well, and even extreme fears of abandonment including abandonment from loved ones. Those with DPD have a difficult time forming relationships with family members, friends and even partners because of the extremes of their emotions and lack of social cues.
Now that we have gotten the Characteristics, lets move into some examples that have been portrayed through media. The biggest form of DPD that I have seen is the movie Tangled, Rapunzel had a very difficult time processing when she first left the tower with Flynn, if you listen to all that she is saying she is displaying many of the characteristics in one setting. The first one she displayed was indecisiveness which is why she was flip/flopping between doing her own thing or not. Another display of DPD was actually from Mother Gothel, she was doing her singing bit which if you listen carefully she is creating a more severe attachment to herself within Rapunzel because she is telling her that "she knows best" because she is mom, which in Rapunzel's eyes Mother Gothel is her trusted adult that handles all of her conflicts and issues outside. These are two displayed characteristics of DPD that some not noticed. Another media display of DPD shown is the show fosters home for imaginary friends, with bloo and mac. Bloo was always looking for jake in everything, causing alot of issues with others with his indecisiveness but then always using Mac or Frankie to get him out situations with the others.
I hope that this thorough breakdown of DPD is helpful those of you that wanted to learn more even just view different medias differently seeing characters or book characters more relatable <3
Reflection time:
1. What other media can you DPD being used?
2. How come you feel DPD is very stigmatized?
3. How did reading this make you feel and would you enjoy more break downs like this?

@InsightfulPhoenix
Oops, I actually haven't seen "Tangled" but I'm wishing I had so I could understand the references and connections you're making. 😊
I found an article that compares and contrasts DPD with codependency that I found illuminating.
I'm able to relate to the experience/logic of codependency as a starting point, which I understand in this way:
1) inner loneliness/emptiness
2) leading to clinging onto someone who fills that
3) leading to fear of conflict or anything that might result in losing that person
4) leading to extreme agreeableness/submission to try to avoid that catastrophe
DPD seems like it ends up in a similar place as far as #'s 2-4 (clinging, fear of losing people, agreeableness) but the starting point (#1) has a different vibe. Sort of like it's more around themes of self-efficacy: "Without other people helping me, I can't manage things or make decisions on my own and I'm going to mess everything up and it'll go horribly and it'll be really scary". And that's what motivates the sense of "I need someone else to help me".
