People Like Me-Poem
Hi, my name is Lucy. I write my own poetry, and I thought I'd share it on here.
People Like Me
everyone who knows how it is knows what I mean
the grass on the other side isn't looking green
the world is too cruel and too mean
but it seems to kill people like me
“bad kids,” “family scapegoat,” “adhd episodes”
too many problems always blamed on the phones
this is growing up in the 21st century
another problem blamed on people like me
social media posts on another suicide
#1 cause of death before the age of 25
those of us who can't stay clean are not seen
we’re “ruining our lives” if we smoke a bit of weed
alcoholics, cutters, and addicts are the only thing people see
they don’t understand inside our heads are too messy
how are we supposed to explain when we’re picked apart?
instead of listening we are judged from the very start
people like to think that they actually understand
the same people sticking labels to us like we’re *** soup cans
people like me know what it's like to hide
by ourselves and all alone every time we cry
our worlds are black and white and so bleak
but we don’t want to let people think that we are weak
people like me don’t realize that we’re strong
all we’re focused on is everything we’ve done wrong
we don’t realize how negative we seem to be
people around us get annoyed pretty easily
we have no clue why everything *** sucks
but it’s because negativity is our only crutch
some days can be good and can be great
but people like me know that the feelings never shake

This made me tear up!
I struggled with ADHD my whole life without realising I had it (36 years). It caused a depression that almost won. I smoked a bit of green to alleviate the pain, and faced judgement because of that (I don't smoke anymore but beside the point).
I had to hide myself from people. Pretend I was doing fine so I wasn't just another problem the world couldn't solve. It's a burden no-one should have to bear.
I can't offer any concrete solutions, but you're on the right track in that you're expressing yourself. Reflection is a great tool for learning, and through understanding the self we may mould ourselves into who we want to be.
I'm also here to tell you: I share your pain. I may never know your full story, but your poem resonated with me and put my experience into words I could never find. It was a kind of catharsis I didn't know I was looking for.
Thank you for being stronger than I could have ever been. I wish you all the best. Keep writing, you're good at it ^^
@lucygoosey1 Hi Lucy, thank you for sharing this poem— it is raw, honest and it really hits deep. You’ve put into words what so many people feel but can’t always express. The pain, the isolation, the weight of being misunderstood — it’s all here and it’s beautifully written.
I honestly can’t say it better than what @cyanessence already said — his words captured it perfectly, and while I may not relate in the same way, I felt this deeply because of someone I love. One of my siblings has ADHD. He’s one of the smartest people I know but our parents are not kind folks and he suffered a lot because of it. His story isn’t mine to tell but I’ve seen him fight to reclaim himself, step by step.
So I just want you to know: you’ve got an ally in me. I’m rooting for you.
Your line — “people like me don’t realize that we’re strong” — stayed with me. It’s so true. There’s a quiet kind of strength in surviving what others can’t even see. Your voice matters. And poems like this remind others that they’re not alone. Please keep writing. The world needs more voices like yours. Take care <3
