Flicker in the Night

"How did this happen" she said
Somewhere along the way it became too much to hold. 
It took over. 
Slowly. 
Carefully.
Meticulously. 

When you're dreaming and your nightmares haunt you. 
I'll come tackle the monsters. 
And I'll find where they hide in the night. 

Every "I'm scared" said with trembling hands and tears streaming down your face. 
Out of sight don't mean out of mind. 
It haunts you.
Torments you.
And it never relents. 

But if you need me i'll always be right here. 
I'll be by your side, even if I'm not next to you. 
Don't ever let them win. 
I can still be your shoulder. 
When your happy and especially when your scared.

How do I not feel this way? 
Thoughts played on repeat at 3am until your about to break. 
"your not enough" 
"Your just broken" 
"Give up" 

I wish I could fix it. 
I wish I knew what to say to make it better.
But I will always be here telling you to keep going. 
You have me to lean on when you need it the most. 
I'm never going to leave.
