Ive sent my 24 year old son to dual diagnosis residential treatment center 1800 miles from home, hoping to get him the help he needs to help him with whatever it is that he is fighting inside his mind and body, he has paranoia, anger, anxiety, he lives in fear and he cant and doesnt know how to handle with what is going on inside his mind and body. So with these mental struggles he has turned to self medicating which has led to addiction. He has told me Dad if I can control what goes on in my mind, than I wouldnt need or do drugs. So I did a lot of research and found a facility that I felt could address his issues. He sees a psychiatrist once a week and a therapist twice a week, I talk to therapist and his case manager twice a week but my son is telling me this place is not helping him, and that he is wanting to and going to come home. Hes been there 31 days and I told him to give it a chance, they can help you better that I can. Am I doing the right thing or is he manipulating me and I have him in wrong treatment plan.

@LostDad1967 - I am not an expert in this area so I can't begin to address your question concerning your son's health- both physical and mental. I can't speak to his addiction either, having never had a child additiced to any substance. So, what good am I you may ask.

I am an outsider who sees a dedicated parent helping a child in crisis. As a parent, my children have experienced crisis and that I can address. It's heartwrenching work that keeps you second guessing your decisions. And when looking back, you see as a parent that you made good decisions and some 'not so good' decisions, but the key is you cared enough to make a decision and that is the most important component- you care! Kudos to you for being such a great parent! I hope you find the answers you need.

@LostDad1967 I know someone suffering from schizophrenia and alcohol addiction who has repeatedly started various kinds of intervention but always backs out after a short time—every time so far, over many years. Based on that experience, my guess is that your son is telling you the place is not helping him precisely because it really is helping him, and he doesn't like the way that feels. If he doesn't complete the treatment, he'll never know for sure whether it would have worked. It doesn't sound like he has found a better alternative. But I am no expert and that's just my biased guess.
