Powerful quote, Vision, thankyou for sharing. To answer the question, Yes I have, I feel experience does help us feel more comfortable in supporting others with a similar situation (I understand it can also be triggering at times, so ofcourse depends on case to case and person to person, we should be mindful of our wellbeing also). Personally, I feel extra protective when I see someone experiencing things I've been through, and wouldn't want them to feel alone through it. I guess shared experiences also contribute to empathy. ❤

I agree 100% Past experience can really help us help others. I have struggled with anxiety and panic attacks in the past and it was one of the reasons I first started here, because I want to help others who are struggling get better, just like I did. @professionalVision2624 There's this cliche of old school psychology that people can't help others if they've been through something similar. As a listener and as a student I have to report that this is not true. On the contrary, it actually works! I'm really proud that here on 7cups we are against this stereotype and members actually choose us according to our experiences too. Thank you for sharing this inspiring quote with us!

I agree with you, and especially if a mental health proffesional is struggling with mental health they are deemed "not fit" for their work, when they in fact can have invaluable experience and things to add to their clients who are stuggling with the same issue. I also think it's great that there is an option to chose "direct/lived expereince" which really puts weight on this aspect of helping

Exactly! And I think that's the beauty of helping someone we see ourselves in. We tend to go the extra mile to make sure they get out of "the fire" because we did and we want to help them <3
