It’s easy to lose a part of yourself as you travel through life. Perhaps a part of you felt unwelcome or suppressed as a child. Maybe you learned to hide a special quality — inquisitiveness, friendliness, spontaneity, confidence or another trait — when it wasn’t honored by those around you.

Or you suddenly wake up one day and realize you don’t know who you are. You feel empty. You don’t even like yourself. You feel like running away. You want your real self back, but who is that, anyway?

@innateJoy9602 I think we can rediscover and redefine who we are. And yes, with things like confidence or joy, those things can come back.

I do not think it is always possible though to regain all skills, abilities or aspects of parts of ourselves that we have lost. I think telling someone that with regards to certain things is really unhelpful and invalidating. It can also come across as shaming or victim blaming - it's not just a matter that someone needs to try harder if it's not something that is within their control.

Also, letting parts of ourselves go can be really healthy too. It's still ok to grieve that if it's how we feel.

I have definitely lost parts of myself, some in good ways and some not good. I have had to redefine myself, some of that does involve regaining some parts, but not all parts can come back.

Yes I have sadly. I felt like I lost myself when a few years ago me and my boyfriend at the time broke up. Felt like a piece of me was missing for a long time :(
