How to Build Boundaries With Emotionally Neglectful Parents
"
3 Common Challenges of Having Emotionally Neglectful Parents
- You have spent your life feeling emotionally let down by your parents. This makes it hard for you to have full trust and love for them. You may have always blamed your lack of positive feelings on yourself and/or felt guilty about it.
- Your parents are the ones who birthed and raised you, so they should be the ones who know you best. But since they have overlooked your emotions all this time, they have overlooked the deepest, most personal expression of who you are. So sadly, they may not actually know you in any kind of deep or meaningful way. This is painful.
- Once you realize your parents emotionally neglected you, it can be hard to be around them. To cope with the letdown and disappointment, you may try to convince yourself that you don’t want or need their love or approval anymore.
3 Steps to Take in Your Relationship With Your Emotionally Neglectful Parents
- Stop viewing your emotional needs as a sign of weakness. Your need for emotional connection and approval from your parents is a sign of only one thing: your humanity. It’s neither bad nor good; it’s built into your nervous system. It just is.
- Accept that, no matter what you feel toward your parents, it’s okay. Since you can’t choose your feelings, you are not allowed to judge yourself for any feeling you have, no matter what it is. Acknowledge and accept your feelings as they are, because managing any feeling begins with accepting it.
- Shift into self-protection mode. Consider the type of parents you have. Do they seem to hurt you on purpose? Are they too absorbed in their own needs and pursuits to notice yours? Or are they simply unaware of feelings in general and are therefore incapable of noticing or responding to yours? Taking into account the type of parents you have will help you build boundaries to protect yourself.
How to Set Up Protective Boundaries
- Take control of the time you spend with your parents. You may need to alter your patterns of phone calls and visits, keeping them shorter or more structured. You may need to say “no” to some of their invitations, see them only on your own home turf, or meet in neutral territory. Start taking charge of the plans, and do so without guilt, since your first responsibility is to protect yourself.
- Create an internal boundary. Become much more mindful of what you expect from them or ask of them. Share less personal information with them as needed in order to make yourself less vulnerable. Lower your expectations for understanding and emotional support so that you will not set yourself up to be disappointed by what they are unable to give you.
- Consider talking with your parents about emotional neglect. Some parents, especially those who mean well but simply don’t understand emotions well enough to respond to you on a feeling level, will at least try to understand."

Very insightful and validating. Having internal boundaries and being in the self-protection mode are helpful.
I'd like to add my two cents here, having emotionally neglectful people around (no matter what their reason for neglect has been) is extremely difficult, as a kid too, and then even while growing up. It's not easy shaking off the "I only got me, I gotta take care of myself alone, can't let anyone do anything for me because they eventually leave so what even is the point" sorta "self-reliant" mindset, it's extra difficult for such people to ask for help, to acknowledge their feelings or even to consider themselves 'worthy' of having some in the first place. (This will get long so I'll cut short hehe)
To anyone coming across who has experienced having emotionally neglectful guardians/ parents, I see you.❤ You're not alone feeling as you do ever.
It'll take time, lots of it, but be assured always that you are *allowed* to have feelings, they are valid, *you* are valid at all times, exactly as you are. Sending so much love and comfy hugs. ❤
@comfortableNight4463 thanks for this post
I guess my parents mean well but they never really have cared about my emotions or what I feel, this has been all my life as my parents are always busy.
I sort of wish that I'd known this a long time ago.
I stopped caring about their inability to have deep connections with me a long time ago. But as I grew older, I realized that they weren't even emotionally available for themselves or each other. So, it's less possible for them to give what they don't have.
I don't expect much from them (apart from providing my basic needs). And I'd say that their being unavailable at creating deep connections with me taught me to 'raise' myself.
Thank you for sharing this post.

Hi Night! 😊❤️ Thank you for your incredibly insightful forum post! I really enjoyed reading everything that you had to say! If this forum post resonates with anyone, I know it's painful and I send big *hugs* ❤️
Shifting into self protection mode can be incredibly hard and especially when it comes with very strong boundaries. It's hard when the smaller boundaries have been ignored so the casm grows wider and deeper. Trying to take control, adding additional structure may fail with some of those parents/caregivers that intentionally seek to do harm and overstep those boundaries. This can simply be seen as a new challenge for them and even be quite enticing to prove that you are powerless. It can be perceived as a new game for them.
The ultimate self protection and ultimate boundary is geography (physical distance) as well as cutting off all communication. It may be a hard choice to make but there is true freedom eventually if someone must go to these lengths. I would hope that it's not a choice that anyone has to make. If it is a choice that has to be made, then you did it for a reason and for good ones. One of the hardest decisions ever.
*high fives* 😊 and big *hugs* ❤️
