How to Tame Your Emotions and Make Better Choices

"Emotions and Choices

Have you noticed that you probably are not thinking at your best when you get really upset?
Similarly, when we are experiencing fear, physical or psychological, we tend to be less focused on long-term outcomes. Although this is natural, many people live in this chronic, stress-induced, narrow lens type of decision-making. It makes complete sense if you’re escaping a traumatic or dangerous situation, but don’t make this your habit! Repeatedly making these types of choice patterns creates chronic decision fatigue, as well as other issues.

Our Rationality

Emotions affect our brain’s internal circuity and disrupt patterns and rational thought. While disruption can be good (like disrupting negative habits), it can also be quite destructive. Unless we stop to think about it, we aren’t aware of how important our mood and emotions are in our daily choices. Especially those that involve our precious resources, such as time or money. But, if you think back on some of the big decisions you’ve made through the years, a specific emotion will be attached.

Emotional Alignment

Our emotions range from really positive to really negative. As with everything, the key is balance. Healthy individuals seek balance, alignment, or congruity between our emotions and our analytical patterns. Use your emotions to your advantage and activate your analytical mind to confirm things.

Emotion Identification and Self-Awareness

Start by identifying how you feel about something. Ask yourself, why am I feeling like this? What makes me feel like this? Make a regular practice of reviewing or assessing how emotions impact your outcomes every day. Become regular in checking in on your feelings. If you can create self-awareness, you're in a much better place to know when not to make a decision. If you find yourself extremely emotional, try to practice decision abstinence--abstain from making important life choices.

Modulation and Improvement

Once you identify how and why you are feeling a certain way and the impact you observe, work on improving your physiological responses to the emotions, and practice deep breathing to get more oxygen flowing into the brain anytime you notice strong positive or negative emotions. Practice mindful observation and listening to your thoughts.

Remember, you are in control! Tame your emotions to improve your decisions."

Reflection:

Are you able to manage your emotions well while making a decision?

*I never take decisions while I'm emotional. I always try to work out my emotions before doing so. There is a saying 'Never make promises when you're happy and never make decisions when you're sad', and I stand by it*

I always make sure to calm down before making a big decision since I often don't think clearly when I'm emotional. Thank you so much for sharing!

@comfortableNight4463 Managing emotions to take better decisions can be quite challenging. From my personal experience it takes a while until you can do what I call "switch off" where I know what my feelings are but I set them aside and don't think about them at all in order to purely concentrate on facts to take the best decision. The best thing to do is grow your self-respect and be sure about yourself and then spend time on the thing you need to decide on in order to be prepared. Thanks for the great post!

@calmDew1576 This is great advice. I agree, 'switching off' our emotions to make decisions can be tough and takes experience and practice to perfect. Self-respect can go a long way. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

When I'm angry, I'm not thinking clearly. Emotions do take over. Mostly I take a minute, step back mentally and come back more calm to face the situation with more clarity.

The situations that get harder to deal with are those that are on-going irritations that just slowly make me just SNAP sometimes and I feel the need to break something...lol. If I do it's not anything that breathes! And it doesn't happen often. I know I need to find a way to diffuse what I feel instead of keeping it in and letting it poison me, so I find an old glass dish or something....find a safe place to throw it and just 'let 'er rip.' It's my version of punching pillows...that doesn't work for me.

@EmbStitcher33 That's one way to deal with it. Yes! Try to work out your anger and calm yourself down before making hasty decisions on the spot. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

@comfortableNight4463 Emotions here tend to be chaotic alot. Sometimes it's hard to fully identify what's felt or why. I try to take a deeper pause - to respond rather than react. Never make a decision when things are too emotional - chances are it will end up being the wrong decision

I have learned from past bad decisions not to make them when I am very emotional. I have learned to say, I am not going to decide on this now, my emotions aren't stable, I will think on this when I am calmer and stable, or something like that.
