New Year’s Resolutions: Are They Worth It?

“What resolutions do people make?

The most common resolutions are to eat more healthily, exercise more, and spend less money, in different orders of preference depending on age, gender and location.

Do people keep their resolutions?

The evidence on whether setting a resolution helps achieve our desires is mixed, with a headline suggesting only 9% keep their resolutions contrasting with another suggesting nearly 50% keep them for more than six months.

A 2014 study into why people failed their resolutions found that 35% said they had unrealistic goals, 33% didn't keep track of their progress, 23% forgot what they had resolved, and about 10% felt they had made too many resolutions.

How to make resolutions that work

You can make your resolutions in such a way that they are more likely to work.

  • Make sure they matter to you and align with your values

  • State them in the positive: research shows that we are more likely to achieve something when we approach rather than avoid it.

  • If your goal is rather intangible, e.g. being more self-compassionate, or being kinder to your partner/teenager/cat, work out how you will know you are doing it – maybe asking them as well. This is an important part of living your values.

  • If you are setting yourself a challenging goal, break it down into steps so that you can start straight away, and can see your progress.

  • Check in with your progress as you go through the year: keep your list somewhere handy so that you can refer back to it.

  • Don't set too many resolutions: prioritizing is important, so if you have a long list, work out which ones go together and which are most important to you”

Takeaway: Setting goals for the future while looking back on the previous year might be beneficial. You are more likely to succeed if your goals are very specific, you can visualize attaining them, and they are reasonable given your capacity and timeframe.

Ah the idea of no progress tracking spreadsheet. That sounds like it would put away all the weight we feel on our shoulders this time of year. It seems less overwhelming. I like it. 💜

To be honest, I believe that you are bound to break a resolution when you make one. People whom I have known for years, people who are even true to themselves and are known for keeping their promises also end up breaking these resolutions. Henceforth, I have never believed in it.

I am convinced that we all must strive towards being a better version of ourselves with each passing year. For instance, if you are good at giving to charity, consider becoming a yearly or monthly donor, if you are good at active listening — hone your skills.

How about you?

Love,

-Angel ❤️

That’s a good point. It’s hard to stick them out. Takes a lot of self-determination. Honestly. I’ve never made it through one without breaking it. So, I agree with you!

Striving your self-improvement year-round sounds very wonderful. I’m with you on that! 💜

I am delighted to hear that there is someone out there who thinks just like me. ♥️

Otherwise, I have mostly seen people fighting with this idea and believing that it is impossible. I mean even after it is evident that they do break it, they are reluctant to admit it. 😂

Awh <3

Everyone has their perspectives. Who knows, perhaps some are really great at keeping them and have tons of self-determination. But, that is definitely not me :P

Yes, I agree, and kudos to those who can do it. However, I am talking about those who are not able to continue with the resolution yet, they disagree. 🙈@innateJoy9602
