The Beauty of Spontaneity

“Most people would probably describe it as acting on impulse, or doing things without planning them out in advance. And while that's certainly one way to be spontaneous, it's not the only way.

In fact, there's a type of spontaneity that's actually quite intentional: What psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls "flow."

Flow is the state of being completely absorbed in an activity, to the point where time seems to stand still. When we're in a state of flow, we're so focused on what we're doing that we don't even think about it - it just happens spontaneously.

Flow can happen when we're engaged in any number of activities, from sports to creative pursuits to simply talking with friends. But regardless of what we're doing, flow states have one thing in common: they involve a total loss of self-consciousness.

In other words, when we're in a state of flow, we're not thinking about ourselves or our surroundings - we're just focused on the task at hand. And it's this lack of self-consciousness that makes flow so incredibly liberating.

When we're not focused on ourselves, we're free to be our true selves. We can be more spontaneous, more creative, and more open to new ideas. We're also more likely to take risks, because we're not worried about what other people think of us.

So, if you want to experience the benefits of spontaneity, try getting into a state of flow."
