When Forgiveness Feels Impossible, Here's How To Move Forward

“It can be incredibly difficult to feel betrayed, hurt, or otherwise wronged by someone, and especially someone you love. Perhaps even harder? Forgiving them. But forgiveness is just as much a gift to yourself as it is to them. We tend to conceptualize forgiveness as something we're giving to someone else when we should really think about it as something we do for ourselves.

To understand the benefits of forgiveness, you have to understand what happens when you don't forgive. Holding on to a grudge, holding resentment—it's not good for us. It causes a lot of stress and anxiety, lower mood, and of course, relationship stress.

When we forgive, on the other hand, we're able to let go of all of the energy we're spending by not forgiving. What forgiveness looks like is actually letting go and not giving energy to a situation which you have a very strong reaction to, or an individual that you have a strong reaction to, or relationship with an individual that you have a strong reaction to”

5 steps to forgiveness:

  • Understand why forgiveness is important.

  • Assess who/what needs to be forgiven.

  • Do some inner work around the issue.

  • Choose to release and forgive.

  • Be prepared for setbacks.

Discussion: Forgiving is not always a simple task. However, in the end it is worthwhile. Carrying animosity or hate only costs us our own serenity. So, finding some level of forgiveness is crucial. That way, you are not unwittingly harboring negativity.

Reflection: Have you ever struggled with forgiving someone?

@innateJoy9602 All the time. Somethings seem impossible to let go when it can affect so many different things. But I need to learn to do this because holding onto something that takes so much energy isn't doing any good

@mytwistedsoul

That’s a very valid point. Sometimes it does seem impossible to let go!

However, I’m glad you realize that holding onto something that takes so much energy isn’t doing any good.

I think in general many people say things like they Forgive but really do not......because most of the time they are really unaware of what they are trying to forgive

Take for example secrets from a spouse ..........there are reasons people do this and many times a person does something it is for themselves ............not against their partner .....

so why ask or give forgiveness .............when it is not about the partner ..........why even tell them at all... they will turn it into something it is not and destroy things that can be left alone.

Hmm. You offer an interesting perspective!

However, I feel leaving things alone can be more harmful.

It can foster negative feeling and communication.

Nevertheless, we all have our own perspectives. I welcome all😊

Thanks for offering another viewpoint<3 ✨💛

Yes I have :( Took me a long time to be able to accept what they did and then in turn forgive them. It's a process of all different kinds of emotions. But once I was able to forgive, It felt like a relief washed over me because I no longer had to carry the burden of "hate"

@innateJoy9602 Forgiving can be hard. In my opinion what's really important is to distinguish wether someone really regrets or not. We shouldn't forgive someone's actions but their intentions and we must make sure that they ask for it first! Thanks for the post!
