Holiday Traditions around the world!
Hi there lovely community!
I've been thinking about my Puerto Rican Holiday traditions and just how different they are from the traditions celebrated here where I'm staying right now. I've been having a great time learning about how the holidays are celebrated here and telling them how things are celebrated in my family back in Puerto Rico!
For example:
In my family, Christmas day is a "nuclear family" gift giving only and on Three Kings day you give gifts to pretty much everyone you know!
I'd love to hear all the different ways you all celebrate and I encourage you to tell us one of your unique country or family tradition below.
What unique tradition do you and your family practice?
Something that I started doing in my family as it changed in the last few years was listening to The Shepherd by Frederick Forsyth, as read by Alan Maitland on CBC Radio. It's on every Christmas Eve. It's a story about an English fighter pilot trying to make it home for Christmas in the 50s. It's about 30 minutes long and it is narrated really really well. You can check it out here:

My mom and I like to watch cheesy Christmas movies together.
In my family we use to get together and have dinner. We stay until midnight and then go home. I, personally, go to the Church. That in Christmas.
In New Year... Well this year we only going to order chinese food and stay at home.
For the past two years on December 6th on St. Nicholas Day, I spend a lot of energy donating presents to charity. Working on giving gifts anonymously to those in need. And I like to wear my Santa hat that day as a special symbol and reminder of St. Nick. It's a new tradition for me and my daughter and I hope to continue it every year.

Our family bakes cookies as a tradition for the holidays.

My mother and I put together stockings for everyone (even though all the kids are almost 30) and we gather the stocking stuffers all year long. Every year, without exception, three things are included in the toe of each stocking. An orange, chocolate gelt (to represent out Jewish heritage), and butterscotch lifesavers. There will never be a Christmas without them.
in oaxaca, mexico, on new years, a boy and a girl dress up as the opposite sex and they aren't allowed to show their face and let others know who they are and they go to different houses and dance with the people who live there (this is in a little town where everyone knows each other) and they get money for dancing with each other and it's cool and different.
