Holiday Traditions around the world!
Hi there lovely community!
I've been thinking about my Puerto Rican Holiday traditions and just how different they are from the traditions celebrated here where I'm staying right now. I've been having a great time learning about how the holidays are celebrated here and telling them how things are celebrated in my family back in Puerto Rico!
For example:
In my family, Christmas day is a "nuclear family" gift giving only and on Three Kings day you give gifts to pretty much everyone you know!
I'd love to hear all the different ways you all celebrate and I encourage you to tell us one of your unique country or family tradition below.
What unique tradition do you and your family practice?
Hi! I live in Spain and we celebrate Dia Des Muertos (Day of The Dead) most times of the year. It's a wonderful time to celebrate the dead and really connect with them. I know our traditions may seem strange to others but I believe iit's a great day to remember who have been lost. I hope everyone remembers their lost loved ones!
Getting depressed for the holidays. Nothing like a good ol crippling depression under the non-existing tree.
@cosmicish :( I spend a lot of December sitting around sad too. I still put the tree up. A fake one.
@Iara hmm in my country Christmas Eve is somewhat very important. We all wait till the North Star is being seen and then we start our Christmas Eve dinner, where you need to try at least 12 dishes because it means 12 months of happiness or something. And after we eat, we are pulling straws that are placed under the tablecloth and it's some kind of spell, it tells us how our year is going to go, like if it's long and fat, it means that you will be rich, healthy and happy and so on.
Oh and we are getting presents under the Christmas tree during the Christmas morning. In my family we wait till everyone wakes up and then we pack them together and say thank you for Santa Claus (we still have little children in our family so it's still a Santa Claus game)

For the past 7 years since I've been married, my husband is Mexican, so my Christmas traditions changed. Our families gather on Christmas Eve; the special food is tamales, atole, pozole; and at midnight on Christmas Day we all open gifts. Usually we play Secret Santa b/c the family is too big to buy each one a present. My mom always makes a cheesecake. This year I contributed though and made a shrimp cocktail lol. My sister in law does a lot of cooking - I don't know how she can do it! I went to Mexico for Christmas of 2015 and saw my other 3 sister in laws make the tamales - Wow. That's a lot of work! :)
These are so cool. My traditions involve singing, Church and food...
Everyone gets stocking in Christmas morning.
We eat brunch at my aunt's & play dirty Santa. My family is really dirty & will often steal things they don't even want just to mess with everyone or keep the game going. Then we hang around playing games, usually long enough to have coffee & lane cake or even another meal.
I have no traditions
We get the presents 24th December morning, because of my little brother. He can play with the new toys for the whole day and there is no problem with putting him in bed :)
I live in Pakistan. It's a Muslim country. We don't celebrate Christmas here. Our biggest events are Independece day, Eid ul Fire and Eid ul Azhar. Also we celebrate the birthday of last prophet Muhammad PBUH.
We cook special maels and invite friends and relatives and append quality time together.
On Eid ul Fitr, children get money from elders as Eidi. Eid ul Azha is also called Baqra Eid. We sacrifice goats, cows, and camels and distribute the mart on poor, relatives and friends. And a lot of meat dishes are cooked.
