Fahrenheit 451 is indeed a fine novel...& a prophetic one.

Other fave classics:

  • 1984 - George Orwell
  • Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
  • Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad (anything written by Conrad is great)
  • Lucifer's Hammer - Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle (post-apoc classic)
  • My Name is Asher Lev - Chaim Potok
  • Whirlwind - James Clavell

If you're wondering which book to start with, pick whichever one(s) you haven't read.

Prophetic? How so?

I really want to read 1984. I look for it every time I go to a thrift store. <3

@jesusredeemedme2425 Because the novel predicted a notable drawback of modern society, along with some of the consequences, namely: the death of reading culture.

Sure, sometimes a novel gets trendy & a bunch of ppl pick it up. Any of the Harry Potter novels & Shades of Grey are good examples. But overall our society is influenced--defined, even--by what we see on screens (particularly phones), not by the printed word. Reading is not typical of most modern people. One reason is because of modern communications tech, we don't have the attention span for it. That was something Ray Bradbury saw coming. He was a prophet in that way. So was Aldous Huxley, when he wrote Brave New World.

Amen. Reading is such a dying art. My younger coworkers almost brag about how they haven't read a book since ____ grade. It's sad.

Even me... I used to be ADDICTED to reading and... then I got a smartphone. Attention span is now that of a goldfish. Sigh...

@Geodegirl

If you like books like that, try "The Girl Who Owned a City". It's a YA dystopian novel. It's been my favorite books since childhood, and it's timeless! It's about what would happen if all the adults disappeared because of a deadly virus, and how the kids would learn to take care of themselves. It's such a deep, inspiring book! <3
