Guilt because of my breakup

I broke up with my boyfriend of 6 years today because he wasn't willing to get a job without me pressuring him. We were together for 6 years and in that time he had 1 job for 2 months and was trying to apply to med school (applied 3 times, didn't get in). He couldn't make a decision about his life and I don't want to wait any longer to start mine. I feel terrible about, like the worst scum on earth. I love him, but I don't see a future with him anymore.

Hi! @impartialCat705

I understand that you're feeling guilty. Is that perhaps because you feel like you hurt him by ending your relationship? Because it seems the relationship was also hurting you. Your ex was a grown man, fully capable of motivating himself to get a job and support himself as much as you have been supporting the both of you. It takes two to tango; if he wanted to be in a relationship with you, he needed to participate.

It's never your job to take care of someone else at your own expense (except your children). You come first in your world. It sounds like you were just looking out for yourself, and, again, he had plenty of opportunity to save the relationship if he so desired.

I hope you give yourself time to heal. But it sounds like you're a strong, independent, self-aware person to identify this problem and rectify it for yourself. You're doing a good job taking care of yourself...don't stop now!
