Had to leave sweetest man (but alcoholic)

March 1st, 2016

He was, without question, the best man I've ever loved. The love of my life for the past three years. He was kind, thoughtful, funny, handsome, interesting, smart- the whole package. But he was also an alcoholic. He could go months without a drink but he would always start drinking again. He would be uncaring, disgusting, reckless, and mean when he was drunk. He would drive drunk, had DUIs, and fell on me and elbowed my eye. I thought, "When am I going to draw the line? Where is the line?" I said to myself, "Today. Now." I stopped accepting his calls and stopped answering his texts. It's been 6 days of no contact after practically being inseparable for 3 years. I feel like a jerk for breaking it off that way but I know I could never, ever break up with him. This is hard because I love him so much but he'll never change.

It's okay sweetie, sometimes we must cut contact with some people :( Is not being a jerk, is for our health. For example, I was 2 years with a guy, he was lovely but he had his problems and they were affecting me and my family, so I had to finish with him.

Is hard, but sometimes we have to do it.

@Stormydaze

Hello.

Well, as long as he's still breathing which means he's alive which means he could change his ways. There is potential due to still being alive and being alive gives the power to affecr change. Life is about change, its never constant. He'll never change once he's dead but as long as he isn't dead, then the possibility is there.

HOWEVER

Old habits do die hard. Especially when addictive substances are involved in those habits. So more often than not, when someone has a bad habit (or any habit really) it'll probably stay with them forever. Its easy to stick to routine and he might not even be aware of think of his drinking as a bad deal. As long as the status quo remains, so will the habit.
