Is it normal for my ex's mother to try to keep a really close relationship with me?

Ok, I need some advice. My ex and I have been apart for about 5 months now. Him and I have a young son together. The issue that is happening is that his mother expect to have a really close relationship with me. She expects me to want to go shopping, do lunch etc. and this makes me uncomfortable since I am trying to move forward. Her ex and I have 50/50 custody arrangement so she still gets to see my son. Is it typical for an ex's mother to want to continue up a close friendship. I have tried to get my space from her, by not initiating contact, but she will either text or call me. She has even sought me out on social media. I am just wondering is this typical and what is the best way to handle this situation.

I have told her that I need my space and she just goes on about how we have a history together and she enjoys me and cares for me.

This is completely normal. You should carry on meeting her and socialisingwith her as much as it makes you comfortable. She sees herself as a mother figure to you, it would naturally be hard for her to cut off ties. However if you are not comfortable with this, tell her so, remember that she is an old woman who enjoys your company so try to be sympathetic! Hope I was able to help.

Listening to you, this sounds like it is quite difficult for you. I want to encourage you asI think over time this will change. Initially we often want to continue with the old relationships and that is probably what his mother is doing. Whereas you are wanting to move on. She is at a different place to you now but in time this is likely to change. I think it is up to you to decide what you are comfortable with .

I think that it is normal because she probably wants to have a close relationship with the mother of her grandson, but I agree thather beingpersisent on being close to youand you not wanting to ishard espeically since you are trying to move on from her son! She needs to understand that just because she is the grandmother of your child does not mean you twohave to be best friends, just havinga healthy and civil relationship is what is necessary. Hopefully she will realize that you are not comfortable and give you some space!

Thanks everyone for your opinions. I have just been trying to make sense of all of this. I just think it is a bit selfish for her to expect me to want to hang out etc. I have just tried to limit contact but she continues to reach out to me via phone or text. Not very long ago she found me on facebook and complimented one of my photos although we are not friends. As of lately she has been coming up with excuses to contact me.

Overall she is not a bad person BUT at the same time she has been an enabler for her son. Recently my ex did something to me that was unthinkable. (he pretty much ignored me when my brother died) so my ex's mother knows how much this bothers me and I wont like, I still cry about it a few times a week. So she tries bringing up something that happened over 4 years ago that I didn't even realize that I did wrong. She basically tried to make it look like that I did the same thing to my ex when his grandma died which was NOT true. She tried to make me feel very guilty about it and she said that her son told her that he expressed condolences about my brother's death. When I told her this was not true, she got real quiet like.
