Should I wait for her?

I've just gotten out of a 5 year relationship with my girlfriend. We were together for 3 years then spent another 2 year in a long distance relationship. She plans to stay on in that country to work for at least another 2 years. I was fine with that from the beginning. Now, she wants to end the relationship. Initially, she wanted a break from relationships. She has been in 2 relationships in total over the span of 8 years, 5 of those years were with me. She now wants to spend some time being single and make life decisions without considering anyone else. I feel that we still love each other very much. Things were as perfect as it can get between us. I just got back from visiting her 4 months ago. She cannot promise that she'll come back home after 2 years. RIght now, she doesn't want to tie me down in this relationship and she did say that she wants me forever but not right now. This was my first serious relationship by the way and it has had a very huge emotional impact on me. I still love her very much and want nothing but the best for her. We're still in contact and we're talking as friends. Part of me still hopes to reconnect one day and start a family with her. I'm just afraid that the day wouldn't come and I will be heart-broken again. That brings me to my questions, should i wait for her?

No problem. It's easy to get lost in here... :) I moved it to Breakups Support.

I was in a 7 year relationship with my ex girlfriend that ended for different reasons than your relationship. My ex and I still loved each other and I kept hoping we'd get back together, but in the end it just didn't work out for us. Waiting for my ex to realize she wanted to come back to me was hard. We didn't really stop communicating and I regret not breaking it off more cleanly because I had constant anxiety over every decision she made. My experience with waiting for someone to come back was very stressful and painful.

Before you decide to wait for her, ask yourself what you think will change with time. Why do you think she wants to get out of the relationship with you if you both love each other? Regardless of the reason, it isn't fair for you to wait for her when there are no guarantees she'll come back to you. You deserve to be with someone who wants to be with you just as much as you want to be with them. There's always the possibility you and her might get back together. But in the meantime, focus on yourself and what makes you happy. I hope this helps!
