seeing a psychiatrist after a breakup - normal feelings of loss or mental health issues?

it has been almost 5 months since a breakup, i've been seeing a therapist during this time and i am still dealing with a lot of sadness. i've started feeling depressed most days recently, even if i'm not necessarily thinking about my ex at all. i've definitely had anxiety issues since i was a child, and during certain periods of life (including currently) it gets in the way of my well-being even if i'm using helpful coping strategies.

i'm considering seeing a psychiatrist. i wanted to talk to my therapist about this but i didn't have time and unfortunately can't have another session for a month since i'm traveling out of state. i'm concerned that my issues may not seem enough to a psychiatrist since at the end of the day i keep on top of schoolwork and socialize, but everything feels exhausting. i also know that grieving a relationship is normal, so i'm not sure if the depression is "normal" or something that could be improved with medication.

my therapist tells me to reach out if i need anything - is this something appropriate to text her about since we can’t have a session for a month?

Grieving over a lost relationship is tough. Your Therapist sounds supportive. It may help to write down your day to day thoughts and emotions to her, if she agrees. Something like journalling with someone reading it on the other end?

I believe no emotional struggles is too small for a Psychiatrist. They may give you anti-depressant if they deemed necessary.

But at the end of the day, it will feel like walking through a dark tunnel for sometimes. But the tunnel will end and you will be out in the light and fresh air once again.

If you haven't read it and if you want. Here is self-help guide for grief

Hope you'll feel better soon 💜
